Spiritual Guides?

Have you ever heard of a spiritual guide? I have heard of these a lot lately, and I am wondering what they are supposed to be. Is it a spirit that helps guide you through life? (If so, how does a person obtain one?) Is it a person that guides you spiritually? (Had one, don't want another.) Or is it merely one's conscience, or inner voice, giving one's self advice? (The voices in my head always tell me what to do and not to do...) Can anyone answer this question for me? What is the true meaning of a spiritual guide?

I think that the term usually used is 'spirit guide' rather than 'spiritual guide'. It is usually used to describe a spirit entity who spiritualists and mediums believe is assigned to them to guide (rather than dictate to) them in their spiritual life. They are usually thought to be the spirits of people who have passed over and who have been assigned as guides to the people who experience them. They are sometimes thought to be the same thing as a 'guardian angel', though an angel is, properly, a messenger rather than a guide and has never existed as a human spirit.

@cindiowens I don't know whether or not they are 'real' in the sense that they have a genuinely separate existence from our own spirit (or mind). My own experience is limited (I neither searched for nor consciously asked for a guide but one appeared, nevertheless) but the guide certainly feels like a separate entity and may even have a name (mine was reluctant but finally told me that I could call him Theodorus). I am not sure whether it is a good idea to go looking for a spirit guide. Not all spirits may be quite what they seem. If, however, you are genuinely searching for the Truth in the right way and you need a guide, one (or more) will probably appear. I think that it's important to understand that our minds often deal with information in terms of symbols and metaphor images and very much so when it comes to spiritual information. That is why I'm not completely convinced about the absolute reality of spirit guides. They may be images which our minds make for us in order to try and understand a (real) phenomenon which is happening within us.

@owlwings I am not searching, I am just curious as to what the meaning is. I have heard people speak of it, but never really understood what they were talking about.

Thank you @owlwings , I guess you are probably right, Spirit Guide as opposed to spiritual guide. I am just curious if they are real, and if so, why does not everyone have one. Or, do we, and we just don't know it? The questions are endless.

Like someone said, a spiritual guide could be your pastor or a friend who is mature in the Christian faith. But a spirit guide is not something anyone should seek. It's dangerous to become involved in the occult. The Bible warns against this and God's Holy Spirit is the only spirit we should seek.

@HanVanMeegerin Angels are beings created by God to help us at times. Demons can masquerade as angels of light, as the Bible says. Be very careful to know the difference.

@1creekgirl I've heard that spirit guides are not angels as they would like you to believe. @cindiowens

"I asked my Spiritual guide for help, but I got no answer." or "I called on my spiritual guide, and he/she came to my rescue" That type of thing.

It's funny, Alfredo, that you don't know that our comments will move around as they've been replied to. The answers you refer to have moved above and are no longer below. See, when I typed the first paragraph, yours was on the bottom, now it's moved closer to the top of the page. So, maybe what you said is now true after all.

@Platespinner That's another reason I want to take a bit of time to check out my first discussions here to make sure i didn't miss anyone for that reason, or because the notifications get deleted after a week.

A spiritual guide can be anyone you choose to guide you in spiritual pursuits, such as a priest or preacher. But I think you are actually asking about spirit guides, which would be a 'spirit' that attempts to guide you whether you acknowledge them or not. If you want one of those (likely you do have one or more) all you have to do is ask them make themselves known to you. Be prepared and forewarned.

@cindiowens Lol. Spirit guides tend to talk in riddles or visit in dreams which can easily be misinterpreted. I say talk but truth is you may only get images or impressions. It all depends on what type person you are and what type information works for you. That is visual, auditory, tactile. Like any talent some folks have no trouble discerning their guides while others just can't seem to do it. Like learning to snap your fingers or whistle.

I think that a spirit guide comes to you in different ways. Whatever you can manage. Because for some it is hard to see a spirit. In my case they are my mom and grandmother.

I think its all of the above. I tend to listen to myself and then think about it for a while, then act. I have learned not to speak to soon or not at all.
