From the past I'm entering the future

I'm sure many of you have seen the movie "Steel Magnolias". It is my all time favorite movie but I never thought I would be living in the movie. I am referring to the beauty shop owned by Truvy (Dolly Parton). It was the gathering place in town and if there was gossip to be found you could find it at Truvey's. When we moved to this little dot on a map town I was surprised that there were two beauty shops. I asked our realtor for a recommendation and I went with the one she suggested. I almost left as soon as I walked in. The shop is owned by a very tall blond lady, who has lived in town her entire life and the phone never stops ringing and everyone had to chat with her. Sometimes I just want to say "let the machine pick it up and finish my hair please." In the summer you melt and in the winter you freeze. It is a sad state of affairs when you have to get your hair cut while wearing your coat. And the gossiping that goes on is amazing. The owner and her two employees talk about everyone - and when they talk they stop cutting or perming or whatever they are supposed to be doing. My husband and I both go there, he gets his hair cut first and then goes out and sits in the car waiting for me. Lucky him... One of the employees has waited on maybe 8 customers total in the 2 years I've been going there. She does her own hair all the time and her make-up! The second girl, well, I have no cue what she does if anything. I have never seen her work on a customer. She mostly plays on her cell phone and is oblivious to her surroundings. I finally had enough. We have an appointment for next week so I came to a decision. There is a new shop in town so we took a ride and I went in to scope it out. It's clean, they have a TV, the even have heat so I'm sure they have A/C! They take credit cards, so I won't have to pay by check any longer. They have an actual price list, no guessing how much things cost. I know we will be paying more but at least I will be able to take my coat off! Now all I have to do is cancel the appointments for the Steel Magnolia's beauty salon! The times they are a changing.... Photo: pixabay.com/en/salon-beauty-woman-beautician-hair-43989/

I am sure that the Steel Magnolia's beauty salon attracts all the gossip lady of your town. I cannot stand people who talk about the others all the time.

@AbbyGreenhill We have one neighbor who loves to gossip about everyone and everything. I try to avoid her as much as I can.

The only shop I've been in that didn't gossip was the previous one in a different town...the girl had her own little shop - no other employees...so no gossip. I loved it.

Most of beauty shops are like that around here. They are always talking about others and i hate that habit. It is a good thing you have an option now

If there is one thing that I can not stand, it's gossiping, so I would never go there for sure.

And when they aren't gossiping they are talking about their kids sports and what the points were and who played good and aren't they all wonderful....if they put some of that energy into cleaning it would help.

It's a wonder the first shop keeps going. Possibly it's all the gossip that brings people in.

It's owned by a local and it's evident she has quite a following. She does nice work, but I also appreciate comfort which isn't provided. This is a small town and I would imagine this was the original beauty shop in town.

Yes one wants to be comfortable while getting their hair cut. I hope the next place does a good job

My husband did go to the only barber in town but the gossip in there was worse than the ladies and the guy gave awful haircuts!

Wow, what an unprofessional way to run a business. I guess they must rely on the customers' desire for gossip to bring them into the shop, since it sure doesn't sound like it's the atmosphere that keeps people coming back! I have to wonder if the lack of climate control in there is because they have to pinch pennies...

I think the pay cheap rent and the landlord won't fix or update things. They all drive new cars, so I don't see any money issues. Heck with what i tip her she could afford to make some upgrades! We only kept going since she always did a good job.

@AbbyGreenhill Oh, they could be financing the cars for horrible interest rates and stretched to the max. It doesn't seem right that they'd let their customers freeze or fry like that, though.

@yukimori And they laugh about us being cold. That really ticked me off.

How interesting. I have not been to a beauty salon in some years because the "color" I put on my hair, I found it in a box at Wal-Mart and CVS for only 7 to 8 dollars a box, and my husband always helps me put it on. I feel like I save a lot of money that way. Also, when I need a trim, my husband will trim my hair.

They have not been open long, so they are probably hungry for customers.
