Wine Down Wednesday

Canada

While on vacation one of the things we look forward to is visiting as many restaurants and bars that we can. Not just any restaurants and bars. We look for where the locals go. We want to taste the food the locals love, and chat with the people who work there or sit by us if we're sitting at the bar. After visiting a restaurant we had read about, the staff suggested a few of the local places so we stopped at a Cajun place. We would have never stopped there without the recommendation only because Cajun food is not high on our list of favorite foods. The bartender told us happy hour on Wednesday, wine is $2.00 and beer is $1.00... So we went to Wine Down Wednesday and it was tasty and cheap. The photo was taken at another bar/restaurant that we stopped for lunch another day. The money hanging on the ceiling and plastered all over the walls reminded us of a bar we went to a few years in South Carolina, with the same decor. Have you seen real money used as wall and ceiling decorations?

Gosh, that's a bit different. No, I've never seen that. In Ireland I've seen a bar with hundreds of bras hanging from the ceiling. That was a bit different too!

@PainsOnSlate Any little gimmick is good for trade isn't it? There was a hotel-owner in a small country town near here years ago. He couldn't get anyone to manage the hotel and didn't want to lose the licence so he had to run it himself. He was incredibly grouchy and tourist buses would call in just to see this man who was so rude to his customers. He didn't want custom so having tourist buses pull in just made him madder.

I'm glad that you are having fun trying out the local restaurants. I couldn't make out what your picture was till I read your post - shouldn't it be the other way up?

@PainsOnSlate this one looks better..maybe. @jaboUK I tried to fix that photo but it wouldn't budge so I switched in another, and changed tis one to one taken in 2013 in South Carolina...both rearaurants/bars said their patrons started it by adding money to the ceilings and then the walls just foe fun...

I have to admit that I don't think I have. We went to another new restaurant today here in town, Gators Dockside, had a good meal.

we have always been attracted by the TV show Diners, Drive-in's and Dives.. There is one here that was on TV and we found it yesterday. It's winter and a lot of restaurants are closed but this one opens today so we will check it out. We tend to look for the oldies, but that place we had lunch was great! Jeff mentioned there is one in Gainesville covered in money, sorry I missed it...

I've not seen any money on ceilings, I can remember seeing money (coins) in wishing wells but that isn't the same.

Not the same, as cool as it is, I don't want to eat a meal with dirty, dusty money hanging over my food. it is cool to see but certainly not very hygienic.

Local restaurants are the best. We went back to Paris 3 times to try to locate the one we visited on our first trip. Could never find it. Perhaps another visit is necessary. I never saw money hanging from a ceiling, just on a wall. What fun!

It's a southern type of food, and what I've tasted in the past was too hot for me. I know there is great Cajan foods available and I will be tasting some there

I love Cajun food, I have seen a restaurant in Texas with men ties on the walls, the reason was they cut the tie because they wanted a "casual dressing".

We have a bar here in my city that is the same way...the ceilings are covered with dollar bills! It's the "cool" thing to do when you go there for the first time...get out a dollar and ask the staff to stick it on the ceiling. Most of the money up there has messages, autographs, sayings, etc. It's pretty neat!

I was impressed with the ones I saw.they mark them too so it's harder to use if snatched. I wish I'd visited Gainsville. Maybe get next time.

Not as room decor. I have seen the first $1.00 that was taken in framed on the wall.

The waitress said when someone comes in they ask to put a dollar up with the rest, they sign it and it's marked before put up. We didn't, but we had some and a drink...

It sounds like you are having fun. I do remember one restaurant where we used to stop on our way to skiing they had money stuck all over the walls too. That was in Edson, Alberta.
