Another Sunset Painting the Sky

I wasn't going to put up a second sunset post but how could I resist when I came upon this one? We don't often get such a red sunset. This is looking to the west (duh – Note to Self: sunsets are usually in the west) from our front verandah.

The red comes mostly when there are particles in the sky. Don't you often have dust in the air to break up the rays? I thought much of Australia is dry. Guess I'm wrong.

It could well have been after a fire somewhere. Smoke travels a great distance and creates some amazing sunsets, particularly on the coast. Much of Australia is dry but not around the edges except in the north.

@JudyEv We have great sunsets when there is smog. You've heard of silver linings? At least smog is pretty at sunset. Mostly, however, our smog has improved greatly, and is not often a factor now.

@ElizabethWallace There is another big fire close to where the last one was so we can expect some colourful sunsets over the next few days.

Beautiful photo! Isn't it nice to be able to depend on the fact that sunsets are always in the west, and sunrises always in the east--at least twice a day (when the sky is clear) I can give you reasonable estimate of which direction I am aimed in .

There aren't too many givens in this world are there? Actually Vince found it hard in the northern hemisphere as the sun arcs to the south (towards the equator) during the day while for us at home it arcs to the north (also towards the equator funnily enough). It used to throw us a bit - always seemed 'wrong'.

@JudyEv I'm sure we'd have the same problem if we traveled to the southern hemisphere.

We get lots of those reds here, once again dependent upon the cloud cover. Spectacular. And I find it somehow comforting that, no matter where we are, the sun DOES always set in the west, for all of us!

Actually it would be a bit unsettling if it set all over the place and you never knew where it was going to be.

@JudyEv Yes it would. I feel the same about a full moon. If I'm seeing it here in Maine, others are either seeing it, have already seen it, or will be seeing it. Something magical about that.
