Did you know that when you slice across an apple you find a five pointed star in the middle? I have a dehydrator, and I got some apples at a really good price at the grocery store. They sell bags of less than perfect produce for 99 cents. I had about a dozen apples that I needed to use up so I made apple rings. They turned out really good. They make a good snack, will be tasty in granola as well. I have jars of peppers I dried year before last that I can add to soups. Later this week I will make some jerky, as I got fajita sliced beef for 40% off. Maybe I am seeing dollar signs, not stars.

What I did not realize until just recently is that I could just use an oven set on 150. I have also seen instructions for solar dehydrators.

I love eating peeled apple slices, they are delicious, but I've never tried a dehydrator, so am not familiar with how they'd taste.

dried apples
I only dipped them in a lemon solution and they are dried like a chip and taste very "apple-y".You can buy apple chips for about $2 a bag, usually sweetened and very thin. If you can set your oven to 150 you can use it like a dehydrator.

I love my dehydrator, best jerky there. Applesauce is good too, healthier fruit strips.

Oh I love our dehydrator. Hubby made some venison jerky last year. He used a boxed mix and it was way too salty. He plans on making more, but will use a recipe that doesn't use as much salt. I make dehydrated apples quite a bit. They are so good. I toss them in a container and keep them in my car to snack on. Haven't tried other fruits or vegetables. Perhaps this year when we have a garden I will try more vegetables. Maybe some blueberries when I go picking.

I have not made jerky in years since I wore out our first dehydrator. The recipe I use calls for soy sauce, but I have heard that there is some kind of yeast extract that tastes salty.

I used to buy steaks and freeze them to slice thinly. I could not resist this that was already cut.

@jillybean1222 There are all kinds of recipes online. I will make mine slightly sweet and hot, this time. Pretty standard recipes call for Soy sauce, worstchestershire sauce, liquid smoke and then spices that you like. Black pepper and garlic are in this one. I put some honey and balsamic vinegar and some hot sauce this time.

We do not usually cut apples that way unless we want to make apple rings. I strung dried apples and orange slices and cinnamon sticks at Christmas once.

You can do this in your oven. Not sure of the celsius conversion, but if you can set an oven to 150 F it works. I have also seen instructions for doing it solar.

I was disappointed in myself when I went for the dried apples and I found them moist, I swear they were dry when I removed them from the dehydrator.

I am afraid that may happen to mine, as I put them in a big glass container that does not seal tightly. Of course we may eat them all first.

I love getting reduced price produce at the grocery and using it up. I think grown ups need things like stars pointed out to us.

When my children were young, I had purchased a dehydrator. It was in constant use during the late summer and fall months drying apples. They were such a delicious treat.
