Sleep

About a third of our lives are spent sleeping. If you don't get a regular 7-9 hours of sleep nightly your normal cognitive ability can be greatly impaired. Your speech can be affected, your concentration is greatly limited, and your reaction time is very poor. Memory suffers from lack of sleep also. REM sleep, it is further theorized, aids in the strengthening of new memories. Have you felt any of these impairments in your life recently? Image courtesy of Flickr. com Commons.

Yes, today I make more mistakes than usual because I feel so sleepy in the morning. I think even when I have more than 7 hours of sleep, and the sleep is not of good quality, my work suffers too.

I sleep more than that but find that maybe I don't get proper deep sleep as I am always tired.

Some people can get away with only about six hours. I think as long as you are able to reach your REM sleep you are fine.

Yes, I do suffer from these. Unfortunately, I don't always get enough sleep. I do have three young kids, which is perhaps the main reason why I don't always get enough sleep. There are also nights when I have a difficult time falling asleep as well. For whatever reason there are nights when I lie down to try and my mind just won't shut off. Oh well ... maybe one day, I'll be able to have better night sleep more frequently.

I don't always get the amount fo sleep I need, so therefore, I end up falling asleep during the day. I don't know what it is, but I will end up wadking up in the middle of the night, and have a hard time getting back to sleep again. Thankfully, it doesn't happen every night, as there are some nights where I get enough sleep and I feel refreshed during the day.

@celticeagle It sure is. I go to bed early so I can watch a little Netflix, but I end up falling asleep watching an episod. If I didn't have to get up to go to the bathroom, I wouldn't wake up and sleep right on through. I do sleep sometimes during the day if I do get sleepy, ut I wish I got sleepy at night and not in the daytime.

I can't recall if I do or not, but I do know that I've never slept more than 6 hours at any one time. Whats worse is now that I'm retired I do a lotta napping throughout the night and I doubt I get more than 5 hours at any one time, of course I tend to think that could be age related.

@rebelann ....Don't drink before you go to bed. Drink more during the early part of the evening. There is always a way. And these are all natural aids, won't make you groggy or sleep too deep.

I actually feel rested @celticeagle but sleeping aids might keep me from getting up if I have to go potty and no one wants to wet the bed, right?

I get maybe 4 to 5 sleep a night and can only imagine the subtle long term damage. My sleep was destroyed by years and years of enduring noisy neighbors and barking dogs.

@celticeagle Fortunately I have no neighbor issues at the moment. I could write an article on this subject. Yes, I have confronted noisy neighbors and had the door slammed in my face, cursed out, threatened, ignored and lied to.

I noticed when I don't sleep I don't feel very great the next day. I get very light headed, have trouble concentrating and needing more caffeine. I do try to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night but sometimes it doesn't work as I have insomnia.

I have never felt any of those symptoms. I used to work from ten to six AM and I would come home and sleep and than get up three hours later and go for a walk with my husband and than go back to sleep for a couple of hours.
