Easter Lilies

This is a somewhat out-of-focus photo (and for some reason the bottom is cut off) of what we in Australia call an Easter lily. As far as I'm aware they are called this because they bloom around Easter. We often see them in paddocks where a house might once have stood. They would have been someone's pride and joy once I guess. They are very hardy and come up each year to provide a splash of colour in the paddocks – and some gardens.
So I'm wondering do you have an Easter lily or an Easter anything? In the northern hemisphere it isn't going to bloom around Easter so maybe it has a different name.

What we call an Easter Lily is always white, and is shaped somewhat like this flower. They are forced into bloom at Easter. When we put them out in the garden they bloom around May.

I don't know if we have them here in the tropical country. I like the Easter lilies, the colors are nice too!
I wonder if they have other colors too.
I'd like to find out more information about them, and tell them to my children - as an Easter activity.

I´ll check for the name in Spanish. They should bloom around Easter as we both live in the Southern Hemisphere.

We saw heaps more in some paddocks yesterday. They were/are easy to grow so they were popular in the old days when there wasn't much water or time for gardening.

I have an idea they might have originated in Africa but I'm not sure. They are not a true 'wildflower' but the bulbs have escaped from domestic gardens and now they appear in a number of places, particularly in areas where there was once an old homestead.

@JudyEv question is is it really a "Easter" flower or just called that by stores for marketing purposes

We buy Easter Lilies (usually white) in bloom and put them out into the garden for the summer. The trick is remembering to bring them in in the fall and they will bloom again the next year in spring if we do everything right,,, Mine usually die but I do give it a try.

@JudyEv Its so cold here most bulbs won't make it over the winter, Some are cold hardy and come up every year but some, the more tropical kinds kick the bucket every time they get left in the garden.

The official name for this is Amaryllis belladonna or the belladonna lily. It is an environment weed in Western Australia.

We have Easter Lillies in the US, they are popular and do bloom at Ester, of course they are hot house grown and are forced to bloom at that time I assume.

Its a pretty flower..... we have something similar in england and spain... but i think they are called amaryllis... but I'm not very knowledgeable in these matters, so it may be they just look the similar, ... as the amaryllis comes out a bit later....

We have white lilies blooming here. On the first look, I thought you were pointing something in the ground with that photo because the background is clear and the flower is blurred Then I read your post and understood you were talking about the flowers.

It is a pretty flower. The hibiscus you're using as your avatar is spectacular too.
