need to renew my passport

Many years ago, I left my passport by accident at the post office, to make a long story short, I didn't know where I had left it. I went back to the post office a few weeks later, and instead of trying to contact me, they had mailed it back to the state department! This was actually several years ago now. I should have gotten on top of it at the time, but I did nothing, now I am worried I might have to pay a higher fee than for a renewal. It is doubtful the State Department would have it after all this time. Sigh! If I have to pay more I will be upset...plus, I might have to show my birth certificate again..which of course, I don't have currently!

In the Philippines it is easy to get birth certificate and we need to present notarized affidavit of loss and cost not much I guess. I haven't traveled but I always renew my passport because I use it as identification for bank transactions.

Well the state department could have it still, but that is a long shot. I will call customer service tommorrow.

@snowy22315 Have you looked the town up on the Web? They probably have a site with instructions on how to request a certified copy. If not there, how about the hospital where you were born? Is it still around?

It could have been much worse because at least the State Department will be aware of the whereabouts of your old passport. This may not save you from the extra cost, but at least you will not have several tons of paperwork to complete in order to explain what happened to it.
