Call Me Crazy, but I Want to Breathe!!

We have been invited to go to my husband's aunt's house to visit and celebrate her 60th birthday. Although I am more than happy to get the chance to visit with her, I also am reluctant to do so. She and her husband both smoke and I know that with a party there will be more people smoking too. I don't smoke. So rather than subject myself to sitting in a smoke filled room, I told my husband that we will not be going. Yup, call me crazy, but I want to breathe!

She can at least open windows or smoke outside. Smoke, and second hand smoke, is just awful. Have you told her how you feel? Would it make any difference? Ugh!

I have told my husband, who does smoke as well, but he hasn't said anything. When we go to visit I sit in the living room to avoid the direct smoke, but even with the fans on it seems to choke me terribly. I will have to be honest with her though and let her know that I can't tolerate the smoke.

@DianneN I guess it would be better to be honest with her. I just don't know how to approach the subject.

There isn't anyplace in the home that isn't touched by smoke When we go to visit, I close our bedroom door to keep the smoke out.

I can't say that I blame you. I am not a smoker either and try to avoid it.

I have stopped going to visit certain friends because of their smoking habit.

@Jessicalynnt my husband will smoke in the bathroom with the fan on. Even so, it doesn't suck out all of the smoke and when he opens the bathroom door what is left in the air goes into the rest of the house.

I don't blame you, too bad they don't have an outside party. No one that i know smokes in the house, if they must smoke, they step outside..

It is too cold for an outdoor party.

Smoking is virtually anti-social now in Australia. No-one would smoke indoors at a party now unless they happened to own the house and even then I think they would go outside rather than have people leave in droves.

They do go outside when their grandchildren are there. They must think that because I am an adult and my lungs are fully formed that I am not bothered by the smoke.

I never go to parties if I know there is going to be smpking. Because I want to breath to.

My cousin had parties all the time in her garage, which was heated. She required anyone that smoked, and that included herself, to go outside to smoke.
