She was alone with all her thoughts Did not know what to do, Her bank account showed all the noughts, And all the bills were due. Her man was gone, left her his debts, She had no way to pay, She could not even feed her pets, And so gave them away. Destitute, she walked the street, Looking for some shelter, Sat on a bench to rest her feet, Despaired what life had dealt her. She felt outcast, was very sad, Covered with much grime, It's not her fault - she's not bad, Not guilty of a crime. Forlorn, and though she does not weep, Her heart she thinks will break, Lays down upon the bench to sleep, And hopes she will not wake.

Wow! How sad. And this is probably true of many folks out there on the street.

I think you have expressed what most of us wonder about the homeless, how did it come too this?

@BelleStarr When seeing someone like this I always think - 'perhaps that could have been me'. We never know what circumstances bring people so low.

You've chosen a good title for a very revealing poem. The homeless must have some heart-breaking stories to tell.

@JudyEv Yes - obviously this one is imagined, but I expect there are a lot of cases where circumstances conspire against them.

@salonga Most of my poems are triggered by something real, and in this case I saw a homeless woman sitting on a bench. The rest of the poem is from my imagination.

@jaboUK Whenever i see or hear a story like that , i remember my parents . I am proud for them , because they have us , loving and taking care of them , and we will do that until they are called by our Creator.

@SIMPLYD The unfortunate people like the one I'm talking about here obviously don't have any loving family to take care of them. Your parents are lucky.

Yes they let all the mental health centers close because of lack of resources (so they say) here but it's everywhere, I see it all the time but the poem does make you think beyond what we see out there

@jaboUK Yes I'm aware, some have lost their jobs and like your poems says perhaps other means of financial support and sometimes that leads to mental health problems, so that could help them as they can offer social workers who could find the resources necessary to further assist them. Many shelters were shut down also.

@Vjvals It's such a pity if shelters are shut down, when what they need is more of them.

@Vjval It's sad if these people can't get the help they need, but a lot of them aren't mentally ill. They are just unfortunate.

@jaboUK I am a warrior, my friend, in contrast to my sister who is the worrier. This is also affirmed by my cardiologist when my sister asked Dr. RG what are the foods I should limit or not eat, and Dr. Rg told her, "She knows because she is a warrior, unlike you who is the worrier".

Sadly @jaboUK there is more of this happening then ever before. There are empty buildings in every city that could be turned into shelters for the homeless, but nothing is done. Mismanagement of city, county and state monies.
