A couple months ago I went to see the dermatologist about a bump on my ear. At first I thought it was a pimple. It wasn't. I bumped it while showering and it began to bleed. It didn't want to stop. I finally got it to stop bleeding by applying pressure and called to make an appointment with the dermatology office we'd once taken Z to. I got in to see the PA. She examined the bump, injected some numbing agent, and shaved it off. The part she removed went to the lab. I got two weeks of slow healing of the spot where it was. When the lab results came back they indicated I had an atypical blood vessel growth in that area of my ear. The dermatologist office said it was probably nothing but scheduled an appointment for the actual doctor to look at it. Evidently, the doctor hadn't planned to just look. When I got there everything was ready for him to cut out another sample. He went deeper and took more than the PA had. Now I have three stitches in my ear and a week or so to wait for more conclusive results. The doctor says he doesn't see anything worrisome. I hope he's right. In the meantime I've got bandage on my ear and, now that the numbing has worn off, quite a bit of pain as well. The dermatologist did promise not to leave me with a notch in my ear. He just left me in stitches.

Are the stitches better than a notch? Sorry you had to go throught that procedure but it is always a waiting game with the doctors.

The stitches are temporary and a notch would have been forever. I just hope when the stitches come out there isn't an odd scar.

I liked your choice of words 'He just left me in stitches.' I hope it isn't anything serious, and it heals quickly.

The growth turned out to be benign and he doctor does not expect it to come back. I have a follow up in 3 months to make sure it is really all gone.

When I was in college, a buddy of mine was a bouncer at a local bar. One night he was trying to break up a fight and one of the dudes bit off part of his ear. Thankfully, they were able to find the piece of ear on the ground and they got my friend to the hospital in time to re-attach his ear. He had a bunch of stitches in his ear, plus the bandages. I remember him saying how much pain he was in once the medicine wore off.

I guess there are a lot of nerves in the ear and being it's all skin and cartilage, they are highly susceptible to pain. Mine are, that's for sure.

@DWDavis When I was little, I had a babysitter that used to grab me and my brother by the ears if we ever did anything wrong. It hurt so freaking bad that we were afraid to even try anything out of line, for fear of the ear grab! lol

Oh, owie-oomie @DWDavis . Makes ya wonder how people can have 10 ear-piercings done don't it? I sure hope everything's going to be okay. I hope you don't sleep on your left side.

I tend to toss and turn so last night, every time I tossed, I woke up and turned back to the right.

Ouch. I can't begin to imagine how much that hurt. I take it it was nothing serious, I hope it wasn't.

It was benign. Some sort of blood vessel cyst. Once it healed there have been no more problems.

That sounds like an ordeal. Something that seemed simple at first turned out to not be so simple. I hope it heals quickly.

Thank you. I never imagined a little bump on the ear would need this much attention.

I hope that it heals, I would imagine that sleeping would be a challenge as you wouldn't be able to sleep on that side or on your back for fear of hurting it again.

Thanks. I'll be glad to get the sutures out on Friday. At least it's healed up enough I can sleep on that side again.

Thanks for the good wishes. The doctor thought the results will likely be good since there was no sign of the bump coming back since the last time I was in two months ago.

That sounds painful. I once got that area pierced, and it did hurt. Not as badly as my nipple, but it did hurt. I feel your pain.

If this is what a piercing feels like I don't know why you would ever have more than one done.

@DWDavis - It was one of the few trendy things I've done. Funny thing is, we figured out that my last girlfriend before my present one was the one who pierced that part of my ear. Small world.

Any ear injury can be quite painful compared to other parts of the body. You have to deal with it sadly.
