Nervous About Washington DC Trip

Stanton, Kentucky
March 22, 2016 2:14pm CST
Everyone who knows me is well aware that I can be an overprotective Mammaw. I always worry when any of my 'babies' are traveling. My son and daughter-in-law just returned from a business trip to Pennsylvania which required them to fly into and out of Washington DC twice. It was their first time flying and I was a little nervous, with flash backs to 911. In two weeks, my fourteen year old granddaughter will travel by bus to DC with her eighth grade class. They plan to stay five days. With today's events in Brussels, I can't help wishing they would go somewhere else. A leisurely trip across Kentucky, stopping to learn about historic landmarks would be ideal. What do you think, am I overreacting?

It's only normal to worry a little.

I understand how you feel. Given the recent world events, anyone would be nervous about flying! I hope they will be fine.

No you are not overreacting, it is a normal reaction of a caring Mom I believe. I myself always worry when any of my loved one travels especially in a risky place. All that I could ever do is pray hard for God's protection.

With what happened to brussels yesterday, I understand you had to. You're a mom and it's your genes to be worrying about your kids well being. Im sure they're doing just fine and the airport securities probably tighten their check points a little bit more.

@WilmaHenry54 , no, not with current events, I can understand your worry. My cousin has to fly back to her husband and daughters in England this Friday, we are all very worried too. I guess all we can do is pray and hope for the safety of all.

I know that, at the moment, I'm really pleased we live out of a little backwater town that surely no-one would bother about destroying. But there is no rhyme or reason to these terrible people and what they are going to target next.

Your daughter is more likely to get killed on the bus trip then she is to get killed by terrorists. The risk of dying in a terrorist attack is basically zero. Yes you are overreacting.

That's how we feel over our children even if they are already grown -ups , it's as if they are children venturing to it the first time . That's natural for parents .

I think that I would be just like you! I'm sure that everything will be fine, but its common nature for a mother or a Nana to be worried. Sending hugs your way!

No you are not overreacting and I understand very well your feelings. I would also stay away from some "hot" cities.

No, you're not over reacting. I will keep her in prayer that the trip remains a safe one for her and all involved.

Totally agree with you but then, you can't be protective forever, what will happen will happen.Might sound cold but not meant that way, it`s the reality so please don't feel offended.

Worry about what is happening, not what may happen. That is my suggestion. What could happen happens infrequently, we learn, if we keep track of things.

I am thinking I will probably never fly again. I already dodged one trip back in the day when my old company I worked for bought out another one. We drove back instead.I know what you mean about flying. Seems like it would be a pain in the butt now also.

You can't live your life worrying about terrorists, so yes I do think you are over-reacting. I understand why you feel like that though.

@wilmahenry54 The world is indeed a scary place but nothing's going to stop me enjoying it. Ok just trust my kids to God now and get on with my own life. Easily said!

I come from a family of travelers. I worried when my son began his career in New York City the day before 911. He told me he wasn't going to let that ruin his life. Of course, I still worry. It's in my blood.

I understand what you feel for I am a mother too. Maybe the best thing we can do is to pray hard and should not overreact.

It's just natural for us mothers to always worry for our children. Like you said, the latest event in Brussels make us worry more specially when children are travelling. Just pray for their safe flight.
