Got a Good Workout in at Work Today

The University of Florida, which is located in the city I live in, is renovating it's basketball arena. As part of the renovations, they are clearing out all the old equipment and supplies so they can replace it with brand-new items (the arena is 36 years old). Through a casual conversation about 3 months ago with UF's facility manager, I was given the opportunity to take all of their old lockers, which we can install in all of our municipal pools. Myself and a handful of my lifeguards spent the day at the arena dismantling, loading, and unloading the lockers, which are big, heavy steel lockers. There were 43 total sets of lockers (10 lockers to a set), for a total of 430 lockers. It was quite the physical challenge getting the lockers out of the arena, loaded onto a moving truck, and then distributed out to each of our pools to be re-installed. It took me and my crew all day to get all 43 sets of lockers moved, and by the time the 5:00 whistle blew, we were all physically exhausted. I told my staff to look on the bright side...they got paid today for a great workout that exercised just about every possible muscle in their bodies!

They probably won't thank you for the aches and pains, but the free workout is a free workout. LOL.

I was the old man of the group, at least my team of lifeguards who were helping me today were all studly college guys, so they shouldn't be as tired and sore as me! I'm a middle-aged guy...I'm supposed to have aches and pains after a heavy workout! lol

@moffittjc Well you gave it your all. I know men younger that would belly up after an hour.

@ElusiveButterfly I am in great shape for a man of my age, so I was able to hold my own, but I cannot deny the fact that age is catching up with me slowly, and the body parts aren't as agile and resilient as they used to be!

I'm glad that you not only got a workout, but you also got paid for it. What could be better? LOL I think I need to come work with you. I have to pay fees to work out. I am beginning to wonder if that is unfair. I guess you will see how well everyone recouped by who shows up for work tomorrow. LOL

@mommaj It's been almost five days since I've moved those lockers, and my legs and knees are still sore as all can be! But I've been keeping active every day and doing light workouts to help me heal and keep everything from stiffening up!

Yeah, I'm definitely feeling the after-effects of this one! I thought my back would be sore, but instead it's my knees. I can hardly walk my knees hurt so bad!

whoah 430 total lockers made of steel, you must all be like superman for dismantling everything and I guess you will have to fix it in the municipal pool yourself too! what a way to exercise!

Once I got all those lockers dropped off at all our city pools, I DELEGATED the responsibility for installing them to my staff! No way was I going to bare the brunt of all that work! lol

@moffittjc I've been sore for a couple days & I think it is seriously because i MISSED yoga two days in a row. It's very odd. I definitely wasn't living old heavy metal lockers.

Those sets of lockers weighed several hundred pounds each! And the loading ramp on the moving truck was too steep, and the lockers were too heavy to push up the ramp, so we ended up having to lift them up into the truck by hand (which meant also unloading them by hand). I definitely got a good strength workout in today, and right now I am aching all over from doing so much lifting.

My idea of a workout involves moving from the settee to the kitchen to grab a cup of tea! I wouldn't have been any help at all with moving those lockers, but that's probably one of the reasons I'm not currently a lifeguard in Florida!

I generally favor your style of workout, but instead of tea it's coffee for me! lol However, every now and then I surprise even myself and go out and do some actual physical exertion! What the hell was I thinking?

You are a lifeguard? That's really interesting! Must be good to be given free lockers for the pool. Is it an indoor or outdoor pool? I am sure that you had a good workout because the lockers must be really heavy.

Yes, I am a certified lifeguard, but my actual position is the division manager for the aquatics division and the athletics division of our local parks and recreation department. In essence, I am the boss of all the lifeguards! lol
