Bicol Express is a Bicolano dish that has pieces of meat with some fat , cooked in coconut milk , shrimp paste , chopped spicy finger chili and some slices of pineapple or mango . It is a spicy and delicious dish , that I couldn’t resist eating . It was amongst those I ate along with the lechon at the reunion, last Easter Sunday . That evening I still ate the Bicol Express at dinnertime , at home , since I brought home some for my hubby . The next day , Monday I still had it amongst the viands I ate for breakfast . I know I have compromised my blood pressure and cholesterol with the salt and fat overload. Thus , my bp was at 110/90 . It is far from my normal bp of 110 /80 or sometime 110/70 . The next day , the diastolic was still at 90 . Thus , I ate sardines , rice , cucumber salad and banana only for dinner . Then, before bedtime , I took the natural remedy , I was told about . I took 2 tablespoonfuls of Bragg’s apple cider vinegar before bedtime . In the morning , on empty stomach , I also took it again. And when the nurse took my BP it was already at 100 /80 . Perfect ! So I am happy to share this with you guys , but I am not endorsing it to you though .

Oh, I have to buy apple cider vinegar now, for I have hypertension because I ate a lot of balbacua that my husband cooked. Well, I have medicine with me and nutritional supplements but maybe an apple cider really helps.

Do you also take some medications? My mom always have medications with her because as she said having a high blood pressure is something very serious.

Yes, some of my officemates are raving about how shiny and soft their hair have become , since they are mixing some of it on their shampoos. I am thinking of trying it too , one of these days .

@annierose Not yet , but my officemates are doing it . They mix some apple cider vinegar to the shampoo since its fragrant and will at least eliminate the smell of that .

Okay okay. I will have to wait for your daughter to become a doctor, cure me so that I can have those spicy food all again and then, after I am cured, you can serve me that Bicol Express. Probably that would be the best time to be at your place and enjoy the food once again

@SIMPLYD Sadly going by what I read on this discussion about the ingredients and the recipe online elsewhere, this will be too much to handle for my Ulcerative Colitis issue.

The food looks so good! I never had meat cooked with coconut milk? Or if I did - I did not know. But I know what you mean when eating fatty foods the next day I will try to eat a salad or something healthier. Glad your BP dropped and is back to perfect!

@SIMPLYD My mom would rather look for a substitute medicine than take the prescriptions given by the doctor. She has a phobia drinking medicines because when she was a child, her mom always threatened her about drinking medicines because it tastes very bad. Her mom, which is my grandma, just did it so my mom will not play under the sun.

@annierose I think it's the doctor that knows best so she has to follow them . She's old enough to discern that .

We, bicolanos , people living in the Bicol region here in the Philippines , cook veggies in coconut since our region abound in coconut . And we are also fond of eating spicy foods done by putting slices of spicy finger chilii . Anyway , it was my detmermination to find a natral way to lower my bp that did it . I also do what you are doing when you ate a fatty food.

I love bicol express but my problem is I'm allergic to shrimp paste so I substitute fish paste like our native "balayan" same holds true for my "kare-kare". A friend also supplies me shrimp paste substitute made from dates but my problem is she is in Israel right now and stopped making for the meantime

Indeed , this dish is the trademark dish of the Bicol Region , a place here in the Philippines . I assure you it's delicious . Though we just have to eat in moderation because of the shrimp paste that is a bit salty . I really have to do something so that i can maintain a normal BP always .
