From music to movies, fashion to hair style everything is recycled...

We do give these eco friendly reminders whenever we can, but this one is about how the old is as good as gold in every other sense! Take music for example. Nope…not remixes (enough of that topic already!). It’s the old melodies, raagas and old forms of music that keep reappearing in albums and movies (anu mallik and yes even most of our remix albums (no escaping it) and DJ’s would be no where if not for recycling!). Disco dancing made a re-appearance recently. Oldies like Jiving keep coming into fashion every few years, giving dance classes good business. Fashion. Now that’s an arena where trends are set and reset every season (make that month). Do you remember the time you went frantically digging into the attic looking for your dad’s bellbottom pants or your mom’s sequenced sari? Every decade has a signature style attached to it. In the new millennium so many old favorites made a “come back” (fashionable for recycled). The rebirth of skirts, bell sleeves, short and tight kurtis and kaftans, not to forget the platform heels has already been well documented in all fashion magazines! Sadhna (yesteryear super star - for you young guns) and her fringe were famous in her day. The fringe was also (probably still is!) a hot rage in the 2000s. Sehgals’ hairstyle and Elvis’ sideburns – how many times have we seen those being the fashion statement for men?! Some traditional symbols are also making a comeback! Has an acquaintance of yours suddenly been (proudly) sporting a crimson slash of colour on her forehead? The custom of applying sindoor which had been relegated to the villages and only certain sections of society is now a fashion symbol! TV serials with the glam doll bahus applying sindoor in designer and artistic ways has made this a trendy fashion statement! From big dumping bags to the sequenced clutch bags of bygone eras; from boots to mojris and kolapuris - here today gone tomorrow…gone today back tomorrow! Mom’s heels, Dad’s ties, grandma’s saris and grandpa’s mufflers…don’t throw anything away (ok at least keep one of every style) you never know when you’ll need them! What do you think is most likely to make a come back (in fashion, music or anything)? Let us all hear about it.
