Researching container gardens

We want a garden, but have issues with ground vermin. So we pondered a raised bed, or something. I am liking what I see of vertical container gardens. No ground access, so no burrowing mammel issues. We can move it around if we need on a roller. We can control the dirt in it, and water, and we don't have to plow up a bunch of yard. I saw one done in bamboo, for herbs, that was cool, and one in a large barrel, I liked that as well. They seem expensive, so the question is, can we make ourselves, and will it be worthwhile. I am betting so, but... Anyone out here done something like this before, any hints, tips or advice?

I have not experienced vertical gardens, but my neighbors have installed raised garden beds. They are much better because they are easier to keep and there are less weeds that develop. I took a photo of the garden of my neighbor just to show you.

I had to read this discussion as I was curious to know what a container garden was. Of course I would not attempt building one.

@Jessicalynnt Put drainage holes in the bottom, fill 1/4 the way with rocks or gravel when fill with dirt.

The garden experts here would know - @fishtiger57 and @JaboUK would probably be able to tell you all you need to know. @TheHorse was also doing some container gardening on his patio. He might have tips for you as well.

I have seen raised beds made entirely with pallets. It would be the cheapest way to go if you can find free pallets.

Our terrace has a lawn and flowers in pots. Apart from plants in the ground I have many potted plants.

I like Abby's suggestion about the gravel and rock combination. That should save you a ton of money! Going to remember that!!

If you buy something it will be expensive. Find something that you can build yourselves. We have a raised bed, should have made it a little higher to eliminate more bending! We also had it made too wide - oh well, it works, stuff grows like crazy - filled with mushroom mulch. That photo is from mid-May last year.

Wish that I could help, but we gave up. The bunnies took over every garden we ever had.

The critters don't invade my balcony that often, so my plants do well there. Raccoons are hard to stop. Seems like they can get into anything. A raised planter sounds good, though squirrels might attack from above if there are structures nearby.

we dont have squirrels, I know they are in the area, but not in our immediate one, too many hawks I think

We put in raised beds. It's so much easier to work in. To limit the vermin issue, we put wire mesh under it.

We have planted in large flower pot and anything we think might grow in. In past I have grown, squash, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers. I just love to watch things grow and also eating them!
