The Paramedic Was Rushed to the Hospital

So much of what I have written lately has been serious, I thought it would be nice to share a funny family story. @jaboUK told a story about the first time she rode in an ambulance. I have never ridden in one, but one of our nephews has a memorable experience! Several of our nephews on both sides of our family are firefighters and paramedics. One of them lives in a small town where the paramedics are on stand-by at the high school football games in the fall. The paramedics park the ambulance on the sidelines and everyone in the stands can see it. One of our nephews was eating a hot dog at one of the local football games when he began to choke on it. The other paramedic used the Heimlich maneuver and other techniques to get our nephew's throat partially unblocked, but couldn't completely open his air passage. When he realized our nephew was still having trouble breathing, the other paramedic put our nephew in the back of the ambulance and rushed him to the hospital. Apparently, when the ambulance drove away, all the high school football fans in the stands started asking, "Where is the ambulance going?" Since it is a small town, news quickly spread that one of the paramedics had to be taken to the hospital for choking on a hot dog. Our nephew was sooo embarrassed. It was a long time before he lived down that story!

I imagine it was a long time before he ate another hot dog as well. I'm glad everything turned out all right for him, other than a lifetime of hot dog jokes.

Yes, it would not have been so funny if things had not turned out so well. I think he has gotten used to the hot dog jokes, by now! LOL

Ooops, don't you just love small town gossip? Thankfully your nephew survived both the chocking as well as the embarrassment.

My son inlaw is a paramedic. On his way home from work a month ago he totalled his car. One of the vehicles he bounced into was an ambulance that was returning to base. No one was injured.

Oh my! I am glad that your son-in-law and the people in the ambulance were all OK. I'm sure he was embarrassed about hitting an ambulance! (At least an ambulance would have been handy, if someone had been hurt!)

Ha Ha! Yes, there was an ambulance on stand-by to take him to the hospital. Of course, he was supposed to be taking care of a patient and not becoming the patient himself! LOL

It was really a funny experience for your nephew, but still he is lucky to be alive. In a small town, it is inevitable to have the story. I hope he will not take it as a negative situation, he became an instant celebrity in town.

Oh, yes! I think my nephew was embarrassed by choking on that hot dog for a really long time. It would not have been so bad if it had not happened at a high school football game, which most of the people in the small town were attending!

It's great to have funny stories to tell. It is also wonderful that you have never had to ride in an ambulance.

I've made it almost to age 67 without ever riding in an ambulance. I hope my record holds for another 30 or 40 years! LOL

@ElizabethWallace - Wow! You have ridden in an ambulance once or twice a year for the past five or six years? I'm sure you have found that annoying. I hope you can put that behind you now!

Hot dogs can be difficult to swallow if you don't chew them enough, especially for young children. Glad your nephew was ok!
