I wonder how many people here make a living writing online

When I first started writing online, there were many people who could make a living just by writing online. They could make about $2,000 to $3,000 a month. That was the time when many sites paid upfront to the writers. The catch was that you could not republish the content elsewhere. At one time, Demand Studio offered $15 upfront per article. That was a time when Associated Content paid $10 upfront per article, and you could earn from page views as well. That is why you can see many full time writers who manage to make a living writing online. Now many sites do not pay upfront, and you hardly can earn $300 even if you write all the time. I wonder how many people here make a living from online writing.

@else34 There must be many full time writers in India. i think there is no harm in trying. Even if you do not make a living, you can get some extra cash.

When the writing sites were paying well, the community of writers was very closed to each other. They were happy to see the success of each other. I certainly was very glad to see some of them making over $3000 per month.

You are a bit too late to the game. if you have started a few years earlier, you would have a few thousands in your bank.

I think with the low cost of living in your country, the income from online sources can really help to pay a few bills.

I do write but only legal documents (contracts, legal disclaimers, terms & conditions, privacy policy, and other legal correspondences).

My goodness. These are the documents I hate to read! Yet they are necessary in any civil society. No wonder you can make good money doing legal work.

@Dextoi True. I think that is a good way to earn income big enough to pay off the mortgage and other bills.

but I think, @scheng1, these kinds of documents will always be 'high paying'...

I don't, because I am not a professional writer. I just joined mylot as my first writing site as it's more like a social networking site where we can write casually. It seems like more and more writing sites have closed down, but I think there are still people paying for content writing, perhaps not on a site like Associated Content.

I think writing is a skill, be it offline or online. Many freelancers write for newspapers. I do not know the ongoing rate for writing to national newspapers. I think the competition is very tough!

I wish I could make a living by writing online. It is a nice job to be a writer because the time will be much more flexible. And if you are a good writer, then paid will be well. The key is I am not qualified to be such a good writer yet. Perhaps I can write a cook book one day? At least this is something I am good at

@scheng1 I guess writers will write only when they have an inspiration

@youless According to those successful writers, they do not write when they have inspiration. They write when it is time to write, and they start to write even if their minds are blank. The inspiration will come later.

Actually it is not that great to be a writer, because you will not have time for other things. All successful writers write practically every day, and they live in a world of their own.

At the moment I am writing for the fun of it and taking the opportunity here to have more friends outside of China. I heard there are people who help write thesis or research papers for university students or academia before but I don't think this is one area I would like to go into. I don't know how lucrative these writings can be but I think the lack of laws protecting property rights and honoring of contracts just discourages me from considering this over resigning from my job for this.

Yes, China is notorious for not adhering to copyright law. I think it is the ignorance, and the way of traditional education. The traditional education encourages students to memorize and quote from classic, but that is not encouraged in the west. When we have to quote from somewhere, we have to give credit to the original writer or thinker.

Yes, I love the little extra money every month too. It sure adds up. Since we are going to surf internet anyway, we might as well make some money out of it.

Anyway, the day of good money from online writing is over. If only Bubblews survives a bit longer, we might make more money from writing.

I've never attempted to earn a living writing online so I don't know if it's possible or not. I do think, though, that it's getting harder and harder for those who attempt it.

It is definitely getting harder and harder. Even national newspapers are cutting cost, and reducing the number of reporters. I think sooner or later the national newspapers will outsource the news reporting to freelancers.
