Quite a busy day today though things stayed quite relaxed. I sorted out my mum’s newspaper bill and her lottery tickets which I now happily do for her every Tuesday. After a few hours online I had to go to a job interview at a Manchester city centre call centre. It was a very loud office with music blaring even though staff were making calls trying to sell banking deals and house insurance. It was a very overheated office. My interviewer was a genuinely nice lady but early on she told me that the job was commission only with no basic guaranteed salary. My debts won’t allow me to do such self-employment jobs so I let her know that there was no point in going on further. I walked round the city centre catching photos and headed to the library for an hour before coming home. Arthur Chappell

the library looks almost like a Theatre in Antwerp. Oh a job with no guarantee is really more like "Chance" work, good luck for finding something more stable

I guess at least you're fulfilling the requirements of the social security office.

I think they just need to get rid of those type of jobs. Somehow they think that motivates people more and guarantees the company profits. I think it does neither. People might as well work for themselves if that is the case.

@crossbones27 it is odd to work for a boss and still have to sort your own income out

I could never work in a call centre, mostly because I am petrified of the phone! It seems bizarre that you're not even guaranteed a basic wage. How can anyone live like that? No wonder some call centre folk are so pushy and rude.

@Poppylicious most call centre staff are alright but management are monstrous and the pressure and bullying to clinch the next deal is horrendous - then lots of customrs get aggressive about unsolicitated high pressure sales too so the poorseller in the middle gets more cynical and aggressive in pitching deals too

I can't do outbound call centers. I was so bad at it that they fired me.

@teamfreak16 I got fired from one too but welfare see that as a job I did and insist I apply to do it again - employers then reject me because I was fired

@arthurchappell - I was out in California. I took my last check and bought a ticket back to Colorado. Long, long bus ride.
