Queen Elizabeth II

The clearest memory I have of our present Queen is of the Coronation. I was 12 at the time and I recall watching it on television at a friend's house - one of those black and white screens barely bigger than today's tablets - and one of my prize possessions was a little die-cast model of the Coronation coach. It's hard to believe that she was already 27 when she acceded to the throne. Even to me. as a young boy, she seemed so young and frail under that heavy crown. Now she is 90 and still an amazing lady. Our longest reigning monarch by a long way and loved and honoured round the world. Many Happy Returns of the Day, Lillibet!

I would not say she was the longest by a long way because George III reigned for 60 years.

@owlwings Oh of course, I actually forget about Victoria.

George III is the third longest. Victoria comes second and Elizabeth II first.

There is a book I want to get. A biography of her titled something along the lines of oh I can't remember! I'm not at home so will have to look the title up later and come back. There will be plenty of festivities around the UK today, I am sure.

Is it "The Diamond Queen: Elizabeth II and her People" by Andrew Marr? Or maybe it's "Queen Elizabeth II" by Tim Ewart (published in February for her 90th birthday). There have been so many, over the years! I really don't know which is recommended, though, I'm afraid!

I think that most of the festivities happened on the Diamond Jubilee. While many people will, of course, wish her a happy birthday, I don't think there's a big 'thing' about it really, in the way of street parties and public festivities as there were last year.

@owlwings do you reckon that's due in part to the celebrations at the diamond jubilee? I just read s quick snippet via s Facebook page that says The Queen will be holding some sort of event ( I think a luncheon) with the Obamas today. Have not heard anything else about it.

I also remember watching the Coronation on a friend's black and white TV. She is a wonderful woman - never a whiff of scandal in her life.

Although I wasn't born when she was crowned, I do have a lot of admiration for her. She has given so unselfishly of herself to her country serving as she has for most of her life. They are showing some home clips of her as a young mother and comments from her grandsons (the princes) on the television today because its her birthday.

I can't beleive she's 90. I just looked up to see who is the oldest monarch to live and she is the oldest too.
