Sleeping on the Job

Today at work, a couple of us got together and went out for a big lunch, and afterward we were all sitting around the office talking about how tired we always felt after big lunches. We started joking around about different excuses we could come up with if the big boss came in and found us sleeping at our desks. Here's a few we came up with: 1. Sorry boss, I just gave blood. They told me at the blood bank that this might happen! 2. Remember that time management course you forced me to go to? Well, they just raved about 15-minute power naps! You should try it boss! 3. Man, the odor from those Sharpie markers must have knocked me out! Good thing you got here just in time! 4. I wasn't sleeping! I was meditating on the company's new mission statement and envisioning a new direction for our company to maximize profits! 5. I was doing a specific Yoga exercise to relieve work-related stress. Are you discriminatory against people who practice Yoga? There were a handful of other great ones we came up with, but I can't quite remember what they were because I fell asleep at my desk while we were discussing! Do you have any great excuses for when you get caught napping at work?

Well did they get a picture of you sleeping? I fell asleep at a client's house. I sat in one of her most comfortable chairs she had. When I woke about 15 minutes later I saw that she too was sleeping. Told her that the chair had magical powers and I wasn't going to sit in it again.

@moffittjc that would be funny considering the post about a coworker. LOL

@ElusiveButterfly It was that post about the co-worker that made me start thinking about different excuses to use if the boss walks in and catches you! lol

I'm a writer/editor, so if the boss were to catch me, I'd say "I was trying to think of a word."

@puddleglum Well if your creative mind thinks of some more good ones, let me know, and I'll add them to my "excuse" list! lol

One of my favorite was always to sit up, look at the ceiling, and say "Amen" in the hopes the boss would think you'd been praying.

I don't know...the way Christians are persecuted these days, you might get fired for praying on the job now! Maybe it would be better to look up at the ceiling and say "Allah Akbar" or whatever it is the Muslims say when they're done praying! Then your religious rights would be protected! lol

I could say that I was not napping, I fainted because I ate nothing to continue my work.

What's the best excuse you ever used?

@moffittjc I was never caught napping, but when I was in marketing, I always had excuses to be out "calling on clients" or eating lunch with them, even buying drinks back in the old days of the mid 1960s.

@JamesHxstatic I use excuses like that all the time! Since I oversee numerous facilities, anytime I want to get out of the office I just tell everyone I'm going to check on the staff, or check on a facility, or conduct a surprise inspection. I love the freedom of just being able to leave the office when I want to! Now...if only it was still okay to buy drinks...

Whenever I get caught out with something like that, I feel so guilty all my excuses go out the window.

That's usually my problem...I can never think of a quick-witted response fast enough, so I end up looking guilty! That's why it's important that I write all these down and keep the list taped to my desk at work! So when I get caught I can quickly look at the list and shout out a good excuse! {assuming I didn't drool all over the list and smear the ink!}

@JamesHxstatic I'll have to keep that in mind next time I fall asleep at my desk! Gotta remember to move the excuse list out of the way so I don't drool on it!

@moffittjc Drooing on the excuse list is inexcusable.

Nope, I no longer work. It was sometimes hard to stay awake when I did residential care.

I'm sure there are quite a few jobs out there in the world where it is very tough to stay awake! lol

after giving blood they feel drowsy or sleeping coz they lose blood and it takes time to recover, it is better to take rest for a while after giving blood.

If I am caught off guard, I will not tell a lie. I guess I need to have a cup of coffee or take a nap on my break time.

Actually, I am too honest as well! I would straight up tell my boss that I was sleeping. Knowing my boss, I would probably be given the rest of the day off to go home and sleep!

I don't fall asleep at work cause I dont have a job. I fall asleep in class but never got called out on it. Some of these excuses made me laugh because I don't think I would believe them.

There were many times in school where I dozed off in class! Sometimes it was because I didn't get enough sleep the night before; other times, it was because the lecture was so boring it put me to sleep!

We had a co-worker who fell asleep every day and we'd hear him snoring away for 20 minutes. No one bothered him since he got his work done and some. One time someone did mention he should go to bed earlier at night and he told them his break time is his and don't worry about it. I like number 2 and 4. I shut myself in a barely used library at our old work building and just as I dropped off, someone decided they wanted to work in there. Once the lights came on that was it.

haha! I loved every excuse you guys came up with! I honestly think I would do a terrible job coming up with some random excuse. I'd most likely to just tell them how it is. That I was tired and fell asleep. I'd feel guilty telling them anything different. Maybe you need those glasses that have eyes on them to make it look like you are awake lol

Luckily, I am the boss, or at least co-boss! LOL Hubby and I have a home based business. I can remember many times when I had to work in an office years ago and could barely hold my head up! You have a great list here!

Even though I do answer to a boss, he's in another location and hardly ever comes to my building. I'm a pretty high up boss myself, so I really don't have to worry about someone checking up on me! lol

@sgbrown Omg...I have seen that video before, but not the entire length of it! This is the first time I watched it all the way through to the end. It's freaking hilarious!
