WHY do you eat?

Do you eat because you are hungry or do you eat because you are bored or unhappy or tired or stressed? or maybe you eat because of the time of day or the rest of the family is eating? I reckon I eat because I'm bored and also possibly because I'm unhappy and don't realise it. I love to eat and I'm a good cook. I live alone and have no close friends and nothing much to occupy my time. Eating is the only joy I have in life other than my fur babies. Pic is a freebie from Pixabay

Living alone but not having friends nearby is not the best way to live really. Can you join a club nearby and get to know a few more people? Do they have a CWA nearby? They often take on catering jobs which would give you a reason to cook. I mostly just eat when I am hungry now but I used to eat when I was unhappy. I think many do this.

There are no clubs nearby and I go into town every Tuesday to meet friends and have lunch. I really have no choice but to be here - beggars can't be choosers - lol. I live next door to the CWA but the place is empty and nothing happens there 90% of the time. ;)

@MsTickle That's a shame. You probably eat because you're bored too, do you think?

@JudyEv absolutely. I'm always doing something but I get bored at the same time. I get the idea for something yum to eat and off I go. There has to be some reason I'm fifty plus kg over weight.

It has been ingrained in me since childhood to eat 3 meals a day plus snacks. Habits of a lifetime are so hard to break.

@MsTickle Yes, you are right. It is hard to change our habit...

@MsTickle On the farm we always had three meals and morning and afternoon tea. Bacon and eggs for breakfast, a roast for lunch maybe chops for tea. Cake and biscuits in between. But we all worked physically hard and by 10am we were glad to sit down for a while with a cuppa. As you say, habits like this are hard to break.

Sometimes my tummy calls to me while other times the salty peanuts call to me. :-)

How can you tell if you have a craving to eat or if you are hungry? i can't tell the difference sometimes.

@MsTickle I see your point. True. Eating can be just a habit or something we just do for other reasons besides hunger.

I generally only eat when I'm hungry. I have never really been a person that eats for any other reason than hunger. Every once in awhile I will eat for no reason but that is very rare for me.

Do you have set meal times and is this when you are hungry or do you skip meals when you are not hungry?

@MsTickle, I guess I do during the week. I go to lunch at 1 pm and have dinner between 6 and 7. I rarely eat breakfast except maybe on the weekends. Occasionally I get hungry in between but if I don't grab something right then it's gone within 15 minutes. I do skip meals when not hungry.

Most of the time I eat because I feel hungry. When I don't have the mood, I will lose my appetitie and I don't want to eat much. If I watch a movie, then I like to eat some snacks.

I eat because the body needs the food to survive and it tastes so good.

I eat because I'm hungry and that is the main purpose of eating, just to satisfy our hunger.

I respectfully disagree that the main purpose of eating is hunger. There are so many delicious foods available. Not to enjoy them as best we can for the right reasons is a shame and a waste IMO.

Before, I eat too when bored but now that I have an iPhone I can use for online surfing and blogging etc. I rarely get bored so oftentimes I forgot to eat because I am too busy here or there.

I guess you are feeding the hunger of social companionship. This is vital, like life for some people at certain times of their life. I spend a lot of time on the computer and I will give myself a break by making a meal or getting a snack.

My husband and I do not eat until we are hungry. Since we are both retired it does not matter.
