Do You Eat Chips or Other Snack Foods, and Do You Follow Serving Sizes?

I've developed a bad habit of eating chips or other snack foods later at night after returning home from work. One thing I have made a habit of doing is putting whatever it is I've chosen to eat into a bowl and putting the remainder away. My husband, on the other hand chooses to eat right out of the bag or container. If feel that doing it this way causes one to eat more than they planned. Although I do put what I want into a bowl, I will be honest and say that I don't necessarily stick to the suggested serving sizes printed on the container. I should also eat what I want earlier so I'm not retiring with that in my stomach. What about you? Do you enjoy chips, cookies or those types of snack foods, and if so do you portion out your amounts?

We rarely eat chips around here, but when we do, they are always put into a bowl. It bothers us both to see anyone just eating out of a large bag, you cannot gauge how much you've eaten, and its unsanitary to touch other chips that you won't consume.

Recently, I've been thinking that manufacturers should put the calorie and other ingredient info down also for if you ate the whole bag at once, or 1/2 of a large bag. Doing that might help those that don't think about it much to reconsider eating it in that fashion. I'm not so concerned about contaminating the rest of the chips. I've never gotten sick from eating out of a bag that he started with. He's just in poor health and refuses to make those changes. But, I think it may be fairly common to a lot of the population to eat in that same fashion.

@MarshaMusselman Its an old habit that I created when our son was young. Kids tend to put their fingers in their mouths when they eat chips, and then to return those little fingers to a bag was more then I could tolerate. I'm a bit of a germ freak.

@Juliaacv My daughter's a germ freak too, but I never allowed my kids to eat from the bags. I portioned them out if they had anything like that. I wonder whether my daughter thinks about that since she's living with others now.

I very seldom buy chips, because it is not easy to just eat a few. Cookies, I try to limit them to 1 or 2 after a meal. I like to snack on fruit or nuts, but even there you have to watch the portion size.

I rarely buy cookies, and the chips I have in the house right now are tortilla chips as we needed them for taco salads this week. If ind that I'm not addicted to those and can eat just a few generally. Fruit and nuts are good. Fresh fruit or fresh veges are probably the best choice and I do eat them in the summer, but when it's cold in the house it's a bit more difficult for me to eat cold foods.

@AnneEJ Since that's supposed to be good for us in moderation, I wouldn't consider it a bad snacking habit. I don't particularly like dark chocolate even in small amounts.

@MarshaMusselman One snack I enjoy every day, is a strip of a dark chocolate bar. I can eat that and not crave more.

Have you tried Kale chips? they tasted like potato chips but only healthier. Banana chips were also fun snacks to eat. I am a huge fan of those chips I mentioned.

@MarshaMusselman There are some recipes on Youtube that shows how to make them. Kale chips have the most simple ingridients.

I've not tried making them yet. I see many customers that give tips for things like that.

During my college days I ate a lots but now after completing I don't feel like eating anymore. I always rely on meal directly right after my office work and cup of tea. But I love eating this with group of friends

Meaning you do allow yourself to enjoy chips or similar snacks when hanging out with friends? If that's the only time you have any, that's pretty good actually. You still have to monitor how much you have at one sitting, for it's easy to overdo it, but at least you stay away the rest of the time.

I love potato chips, but seldom eat them because I am diabetic.

I wish all people that were diabetic stayed away from foods that weren't good for them. My husband is newly diabetic, maybe three years or so and eats many things that most stay away from. He refuses to 'see the light' on those issues at present anyway.

I love chips and cookies and all those bad things! I try not to buy them too often but it's very hard not to. I chuckle over the suggested serving sizes. What usually says 3 to 4 servings per package I usually consider 1/4 to 1/2 servings!!

I rarely buy cookies. trying pork rinds again with sour cream, an Atkins thing. I'm sure my hubby will bring chips home, he has to have chips even though he's trying to eat smaller portions. But maybe he'll give the rinds a chance. There used to be better flavors.

We always put the food in bowls, that way it is more sanitary and also we eat less of it.

Sadly, I have trouble portioning those type of foods. Therefore, I rarely have them in the house. I enjoy french fries when I go out, because I rarely eat them. When my husband was alive, he loved chips and he'd bring home bags of them and I'd eat too much. Now that he's gone, I never buy them, although once in a while I think of him and think I should buy a bag and just splurge and make him laugh down on me! lol

Sadly I don't follow the serving size. I should, but I don't. At least I don't eat straight out of the bag.

You're like me then. I use a bowl, but I don't count the quantity I'm taking. I don't think many that eat these types of snack foods do bother counting or keeping to their serving sizes.

I like cookies, and sweets, and try to stick to servings and work with portion control, but some days I fail miserably at sticking to a portion
