Childhood lesson

I woke up this morning thinking about something that happened when I was just a little girl. I had curly hair, and my mom always combed my hair every day and made it into ringlets. I can remember standing while she worked with it. One day, I was looking at a Bible picture book on the floor when she asked me to stand up so she could do my hair. My brother started turning the pages in the book, and I said to him, "Don't turn the Jesus page". I was only asking my brother not to turn away from the page I had been looking it. I guess my mom thought I was swearing, and she gently scolded me and explained that we did not use the Lord's name in that fashion. She taught me a good lesson that day, and it is something I have remembered all my life. I can remember her many times, scolding my brothers for using sacred words in the wrong way. Today so many people use the Lord's name casually, but I have always tried to be very careful about this. Can you remember a lesson you learned while very young, that has stayed with you through life? Picture is from Pixabay

I was taught never to tell a lie, or my mouth would be washed out with soap. I never told a lie, and licked soap once just to see how bad it would be. Oh, yuck!

@DianneN That makes all the more funny. But, at least you had the fear instilled in you. I often wonder if parents are able to do that today.

That's a lesson that I learned growing up also, and heaven forbid if I ever forget it. It still bothers me when I hear people curse using the Lord's name, I find it very insultive and hateful.

@AnneEJ Talking like that is quite a way to upset others, it does me to the point where I will just shut down all together.

I know it makes you shudder to hear how some people talk.

Nothing comes to mind but I am sure that all of my values came from my mother.

As we look back, we can see that they taught us so much.

I hear too many young people in our day swearing. There are so many lessons that I learned and stayed with me through life.

I hate to hear young people using the name of the Lord carelessly. With a lot of older people as well, the words fall easily from their mouths. There is power in the Name of Jesus or God, and they should not be used lightly.

There isn't much that is sacred nowadays. I never use these words in 'normal' speech despite not being particularly religious.

I don't like to think of myself as being religious, I just have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, and want to honour Him in all I do.

Yes, that is one reason why I don't have television coverage. I am very careful what videos I purchase or what I watch on the internet.

I'm disappointed that the picture is not of you. It's true that things we are taught as children can stay with us for life.

I have very few pictures of me as a child and would have to go digging to find one. I should take the time to get one out and scan it.

I can remember occasions when I was unjustly shouted at for something, like you (because you were not doing anything wrong) - those instances stick with me most of all. Now I am very careful with my own children!
