On Guard

A fat hinied squirrel was chased into the woods by Doodles, the cat. That mean old fat squirrel was trying to get the newborn robins in the nest built in a rhododendron bush in front of our family room window. Mom was on the dogwood tree waiting with a worm. It would have broken my heart if that squirrel had gotten to the birds. Doodles saved the day, but now I have to be on guard that he doesn't discover the nest. Do you have any bird nests in your yard?

That is nice that you have a bird's nest in your yard that you can watch. There are probably some in the cedar trees here, but are well hidden. Glad Doodles protected the robins from the squirrel.

I'm sure he wanted the squirrel for himself, but is too slow due to leg surgery a few years ago. Poor kitty.

@DianneN I was watching a squirrel here in our yard tonight. He is different, looks like a cross between a grey and a red. He is the size of a grey squirrel, but is reddish in colour. The red ones are usually a lot smaller.

I have only seen red tailed hawks here, but no vultures. I'm glad your robins are protected. So no squirrels to eat their eggs?

@DianneN That nest is in my house. I have birds in my attic. I can't say it's safe from squirrels as I'm sure there are some of those up there too. You know that Geico commercial with the mother calling her son about the squirrels in the attic? Yeah, that's me.

I have a biggish compound and so it is possible there would be nests around. I did see one but that looks like it is abandoned.

We have two acres and lots of woods. You won't catch me going there to look for nests! I'm too afraid of snakes on the ground! I wonder if your birds flew away.

@DianneN it's summer, actually, since our climate is tropical so we only have sun and rain. but, yeah, those little brown birds called maya congregate there, hopping and chirping among the branches.

I hope that the baby robins can grow and they will be safe to fly. There are two bird nests in the holly tree in our garden and a swallow nest under our roof.

I saw a momma robin being followed by a baby as big as she was...How did that happen, its been so cold. I have a few nests in my yard but haven't noticed babies until today with that big hungry baby following mom...

That fat Doodles gets plenty of treats! Every time he comes inside, he gets some. Sometimes he asks to go out, then turns around to come in, just for the treats! He is so controlling-lol!

We don't have any in bushes, but we do have baby birds in the bluebird box. Fortunately the squirrels can't get to it.

I'm aware that squirrels will eat eggs, but didn't know they would eat baby birds. We have robins nesting in our hedge, but they are not the same as your robins.

@DianneN Brother-in-law James loves to discover where the nests are each year and unless he is off playing golf or something (and Dixie gets depressed) all you have to say is squirrel and she is out of her doggie door chasing the squirrel away

@DianneN They are, however I'm sick of the geese, they never leave anymore and they are causing problems at the local park along the river. We can't even walk in the grass anymore for fear of stepping in their leavings if you know what I mean lol.

I don't see squirrels where I'm at, but about 30 minutes away where my mom lives, there are squirrels. I did see a skunk around the corner from my home. I'm glad the robin newborns are safe. :)
