Took a kid client to see the horses yesterday

I took my 13-year-old kid client to see the horses yesterday. I've been working with him for over a year, and I'm glad he's developed an affinity for the horses. He moved slowly, as he is supposed to, and fed several by hand. The picture is of me, a couple of years ago, holding my horse (right), and her buddy, a gelding from the next pasture over. My horse passed on last year, at 35 1/2, but her friend still nickers at me when I go out there to visit. We gave him a bunch of carrots.

A beautiful picture. I bet you have wonderful memories with your horse. Kids are helped when they establish a close relation to animals.

@TheHorse I know that now there is a sort of therapy with horses. I donĀ“t know much about it, but relating to animals can be easier for a troubled kid than doing it with human beings that are so judgamental

@marguicha Yes! I did some work at a therapeutic horseback riding academy in Santa Barbara CA. Horses tend to affect people in positive ways.

I agree. I try to take every kid I work with to see both the horses at my old place, and the goats and chickens up at Borges Ranches.

Such beautiful creatures. (Meant the horses) I haven't rode in 20 years and every time I see a horse I think about it. LOL I got a dog for my son and I was skeptical, but animals truly have an effect on people. I knew that, but I didn't know how much. LOL

Those horses look pretty good. Don't know much about them. My son wanted to buy a horse when he was 10 years old and I told him no since we don't know how to take care of them.

At many stables, the stable manager will help you out. Horse people are always willing to share their wisdom as well (sometimes TOO willing).

Wow - 35 is heck of an age for a horse. You must still miss him a lot. Dealing with animals is so good for kids, isn't it?

She was a good friend, and a good co-therapist as well. A lot of kids got to ride her who otherwise would never had ridden a horse. I'm glad her buddy Mooch is still out there.

They are beautiful horses. You must have fed your horse from the fountain of youth for him to live so long. But for you to lose him must have been difficult.

@TheHorse I cannot even begin to imagine your loss, I remember when we lost our dog, that was traumatic on me, but the relationship that an owner has with a horse is much different.

Yep! She was beautiful! I thought she would be! Thanks for posting a photo of her, pony! You must have taken excellent care of her! That is really old for a horse. (I'm sorry for your loss.) That's good that you helped the client learn how to approach a horse without spooking him. You were working with him to calm him down and show him that patience can be its own reward?

@TheHorse People will respond better to a calmer person than they will to someone who isn't so calm, too. IDK why though.

@DaddyEvil With horses, it just means they know you don't want to eat them . Maybe it's the same with humans.

@TheHorse Been there, done that. I loved the looks on the faces of students from rough areas when I taught them foreign languages, helped them raise money and took them to Europe for three weeks. They were then impervious to harm and knew it. So much fun.

I am sorry for your loss Pony...that is a long time to be with any living being. I was barely in contact with two family dogs for about 2 years. Still miss them. So this work of yours...what do you do...like get the kids a friend to talk things over, and give them some of your time get them interested in something....natural perhaps...do you get them to paint? Is it only some children who seem to be problematic that are sent to you or every child in a class?

I get the kids who are struggling or acting out in their schools. We hike and do other outdoor activities, and that frees them up to chat about what's going on in their lives.

@TheHorse .. I am curious about a couple of more things... a) What constitutes as "struggling or acting out"? b) Who decides that they are "struggling or acting out"? Are you sure those folks who are deciding are "normal"? c) You must've tried to read about that teen who shot so many teachers and children...out of curiosity...was he ever classified as "struggling or acting out"? d) Does "struggling or acting out" ever stop considering the society we've developed and confusion it can create in the minds of little ones? Why would I want to tell another person good morning..for instance..if I don't feel it is good morning...lol.

@TheHorse I know there is something, well healing, about having animals trust you and care for you. no matter how depressed I am, or how bad I feel, or how unloved, my dogs think I am the center of their world and are excited for me to come home
