Dying to Fight Off Sleep

Are there times in your ordinary routine that you were obliged to listen or pay attention to something but you could not do because you felt to sleepy to listen? Let us say in a meeting with someone, or while listening to a mass or to your teacher/professor. If yes, how do you fight your urge to sleep?

I do that when I am at home but it is impossible to do that if I am in the middle of a meeting or a mass. I cannot also do it while the teacher is discussing in front or else I will create a scene.

@toniganzon It is cool. I hope the other students did not get jealous.

@annierose I slept in front of my teacher when I was a student. But i was a really good student so he didn't mind. And the boss shouldn't be disturbed when she's sleeping, so the meeting is cancelled when i'm tired.

I try harder to pay attention so I can get my mind off being tired.

It is difficult once your eyes are wanting to close but you have to keep it open or else you will be scolded or humiliated in front of others.

I always feel sleepy during my college days while listening to my boring teacher. I sleep while my eyes are widely open. It seems very hard but I endure doing such an act to prevent from calling an attention in the class.

It is an impressive talent. I wonder when can I also acquire that skill so I will not be noticeable.

@annierose It takes a lot practice. If I can only use toothpicks in my eyes, I will do it. That option will be painful.

I try to stay awake by thinking to something important or to somethings that worries me. It usually works.

I agree. My mom is like that when something bothers her, she cannot sleep.

I guess I always had those times especially when I was still a student. I was a night owl and always studied until very late, so in the morning, I always felt sleepy. Sometimes I just went and washed my face, sometimes I drink water, sometimes I just poked myself with something.

I never know that drinking water can make someone's awake. I remember when I have my friend with me and I feel sleepy, I will ask her to pinch me hard.

It's so hard to fight sleepiness. I even experienced that here. I wanted to read but I could not understand what I was reading because I was sleepy.

If I'm able, I take a nap. If I'm not able I do one of two things - slap myself or get something sweet.

True! Candies or chocolates help when I feel sleepy. How about drinking coffee?

@annierose I don't drink coffee, never have. Right now I'm wide awake because my brain is working on a problem. Is there something you can focus your brain on?

Yes, I usually do that whenever I am in the meeting and our speaker has a very soft voice. It makes me feel bored and just wanted to sleep. To avoid such thing, I will go to the toilet and sometimes I will just slap my face hard.

yeah.. I was sitting in a seminar listening to some lecture I was jotting down notes to keep my eyes from shutting. Then all went quiet and I saw myself writing when all the while I thought I was listening and writing, I was actually dreaming .. end of story - the woman seated next to me woke me up cause the speaker had her eyes on me. lol

What was the facial expression of the speaker? I wonder if the speaker got offended.

I remember once having fallen asleep in class. But that was when I was a high school. Somehow I overslept until the lesson is completed. I sentenced to clean the classroom. Since then, every drowsiness comes, I'm still trying to survive until the lesson is completed.

When I see someone in the class falling asleep, I will call his attention. Then,I will ask him jump as high as he can or do some exercises. Sometimes I do it in the whole class before the lesson begin.
