Strawberries are in!

United States

Saturday we went to check out our friends' new home, the first time we saw it 'finished'...they were waiting for some furniture to be delivered. It sure is a big house, glad I won't be cleaning those 3.5 baths and 5 bedrooms. Since they only will be using the house for vacations and long weekends until she retires in 4 years, it's basically a big vacation home right now. Right now they are on the road heading back to their 'real lives' in New York. The Mennonite farm market in Englewood is just a few miles from there so we stopped in to buy strawberries and boy did they have them! They go for $3.50 a quart which is a little more than the grocery store charges, but the quality is 100 percent better and well worth the price. Since they don't use chemicals you can pop a berry into your mouth and not worry about rinsing them off. I did hold off doing that until we got home! It's a little early for the every-day gardener to have strawberries, but those Mennonites have an in to early development I think! Photo is mine.

those are beautiful, my strawberries now have flowers on them so in just over a month we should be enjoying ours.

@AbbyGreenhill We would have too, better to eat them when they are at their peak of taste and freshness.

@fishtiger58 We froze some a year ago and they weren't so wonderful. I rather just eat them fresh.

I guess those Mennonites have "the inside leaks". Ours around here wont 'be until the middle of June (if we are lucky).

@AbbyGreenhill It must be in their soil then. They know what to do to improve it.

Their veggies and fruits are all amazing, considering they don't use fertilizer -

O, organic grown strawberries. . . Good for our health. Most fruits sold in supermarkets are non-organic. Bad for our body.

I am not an 'organic' person, it just happens that the only farm market within a hour is this one and it's def. organic.

Those look delicious! That's actually less than what they are here at Wal-Mart so you got a good deal on them.

The grocery store sells them $2.50 - but you have to throw half away!

@AbbyGreenhill I wish they were that cheap here. I look over the whole container before it goes in the cart. I'm glad you have a source for great strawberries.

@AbbyGreenhill I can't always afford to pay more these days, but at least at the Farmer's Markets I can use my food stamp card. They are smart to allow us to use our cards for really healthy foods like that! It's my favorite thing to buy! :)

Awesome. That's nice. Also good that there is nothing "extra" in them that could be dangerous. I am sure all in all much healthier for you.

It's a beautiful home that will sit empty most of the time, at least until she retires in 3 years and 9 months.

Sounds yummy. A strawberry or two would be nice with my first cup of coffee. Who will be staying in that large house, other than your friends? I like small, cozy, spaces.

They have 4 kids plus a ton of relatives who I'm sure will be visiting. They wanted each kid to have his/her own room. I like a decent size house - ours 2300 just right for us and the dog.

That will be a big holiday house even when your friends retire. I'm sure they're looking forward to living there permanently.
