Cataracts Getting Worse

Unfortunately, my cataracts are getting worse and worse. So tomorrow morning, I have an appointment with my eye doctor to check them again. Six months ago, he had told me that it would take another year before surgery, but since it is getting more and more difficult to seen clearly I think he may be wrong. I will know what he decides tomorrow. It is such a pain in the neck (I mean eyes) to deal with it. Becoming much harder to read and since reading is my passion, I am not a happy camper right now.

Here they wait till the cataract is ready for surgery. It cannot be done before that.

Boy do I commiserate with you @marlina . I was told the same thing last year because the insurance company won't cover the surgery unless you're almost blind as a bat. My appointment is for 5/18.

My husband just went to the doctor to have his eyes checked and discovered that he has cataracts Well, that explains it, he says. Trouble is, it will be at least a year before they can operate, there is such a back log of cases!

@sulynsi Wow, your husband is going to suffer all that time waiting? Doesn't seem fair to me.

Is it a case of backlog or not ripe enough.

@marlina Yeah but my grandfather didn't have that at all. He said even when he was young he was very fond of wearing sunglasses to protect his eyes from the sun. I guess that helped.

WHile I know I already have cataracts, I don't think mine are that bad yet. I also have floaters which for me mean that the vitreous in my eye is loose and only holding on by a fiber on my retina. Or at least that's how it was explained to me. I may not end up needing cataract surgery, but something else, but hopefully not for many years yet if at all. The vitreous is usually held on by fibers all around the surface with two main fibers one on the optic nerve and the other the retina. If the one on the retina goes a person goes blind. But, there would be loads of other complications first. I hope you get your cataracts done soon and find like most do that they can see better than they ever did before, unless you already had 20/20 vision before they began to cloud your vision.

If you have a tape player or CD player, get books on CD or Tape at the library. I listen to them while I paint and drive. I have cataracts too. Mine are getting worse too. I changed doctors last year and wasn't happy with the new one. I may have to go back to the old one. My problem with him is he sends people around Lake Ontario for Cataract Surgery. (a two hour drive) why not local? Oh well I will have to do something!

Good luck, I know that once they become ripe you can get them done, one eye at a time. Its a rather costly procedure. I teased my mother that we would sell hers on kijiji after she passes!

@marlina No, she knew that I was just teasing. My husband and I came back early from our vacation that summer to take her for her surgery, and then we spent the day at her place so that she could rest and take it easy. My brothers don't do things like that, in fact 2 of my 3 brothers actually had the nerve to go to her place so that they could eat lunch there-they weren't very happy when I told them that we were cooking for her and they could have done that too, and asked them to cook their own meals. They were both grown men for goodness sakes!

I had cataract surgery a couple of years ago first one eye then a few months later the second eye. It was difficult to see anything and even then I still had to wear glasses.

Im sorry to hear this. That has to be very difficult for you. Hopefully you can get the go ahead on the surgery soon. My mom had bad cataracts until she got the surgery - now she just needs reading glasses for super upclose things. Let us know howit goes.

True. Better have it checked before it'll get really worst.I too have difficulty in reading. I am also using eyeglasses even while watching television shows or movies. My father has glaucoma and there are instances that it could be inherited.
