Photo Study Mr Fitzpatricks Rawtenstal Lancashire

This is a pub sign study with a difference as Mr Fitzpatrick’s really is a pub with no beer or alcohol of any kind. It is the last surviving original Temperance Bar in Britain. (A few later temperance bars have sprung up, but this was one of the first, opening for business in 1891). Temperance Bars were developed by strict Methodists from concern that pubs were drawing in more working class people than the churches. Many Temperance activists pushed aside concern for drinking in moderation in favour of a call for full scale Prohibition. They were successful in influencing the American Prohibition experience but they had no such impact in Britain, though Temperance bars did well. Temperance Bars offered all the joys of a pub without the alcohol, and popular drinks included Sarsaparilla, Root Beers, dandelion & Burdock and a specially created drink from Manchester called Vimto, which is still popular today. Though I enjoy beers, I do drink lots of non-alcohol too, and I hope to go in Mr Fitzpatrick’s some time but it was closed during my visit to Rawtenstal. Perhaps soon. Arthur Chappell

Ah, was going to ask what a temperance bar was, and now I want to try half of the drinks you mentioned! Rather like a soda bar, but with odd drinks

dandilion and Burdock is great - you can get it in cans and bottles in lots of shops here @Jessicalynnt as with Vimto

That sounds like a great place to go. I imagine the atmosphere would be lighter than that found in bars.

I'd heard of them, but never seen one, let alone knew that one was still there!

I've never heard of these pubs. As for Vimto. .. I loved that when I was younger. Can't stand it now.
