Wildflowers - Blue Eyed Grass

I have been trying to identify some of the wildflowers that are growing in our fields. This is one of the pictures I took while walking in our front field the other day. I have identified this as "Blue Eyed Grass". It is actually not a grass at all but is related to the iris flower. It grows from rhizomes that send out long blade like foliage that looks like grass. It will send up a wiry stem topped with these blue petals and bright yellow centers. Apparently, blue-eyed grass grows in many places around the US from Canada to south Texas. Have you seen this wildflower in your area?

I'm sure we have these. If not, it is very similar.

You may have these same flowers, apparently they are very common in the US and tolerate hot and dry conditions. I think they only bloom in spring and early summer.

We do have a few bushes that grow but because it's so dry they are low to the ground and tend to spread widely to absorb what little moisture there is @sgbrown the worse ones are those goat head stickers.

@rebelann I remember those awful goat head stickers! They are really painful! I have had a couple here, but there are not near as many as there were in El Paso!

I think that we had some of this flower in our yard when we moved in. I had no idea that it was related to the iris flower.

I didn't either. It doesn't look anything like an iris, but I guess it is related as it grows from a rhizome.

We have had a lot of rain this spring. I am going to dig some up and try to replant them in one of my flower beds. Hopefully, they will come back next spring. They are a beautiful blue!
