Tracking a package

I ordered something and she sent me the tracking number. She lives just outside St. Louis. I expected the package to leave her post office and go to St. Louis. No... it goes to Des Moines... I'm sorry, that seems very strange to me. Of course, you are talking about a post card that my folks sent me from New York City in December of one year that didn't arrive until April. Or a letter my mom sent at the end of September from Austin, TX that didn't arrive in Killeen, TX until over Christmas - with a post mark in Virginia! Waiting to see where my package goes next!

quite common here to arrive home well ahead of postcards I have sent to my friends and neighbors while on holidays

If you are only gone a week, its not uncommon to do that here too. But they sent the same kind of post cards to my brother and sister and they got theirs in a few days. It was a card where you punch the eyes and nose out and you have a funny little mask. I figured it had been on every nose between New York and Texas before it finally ended up in my mailbox!

Airplanes are just as confusing to me. Maybe that is it, they are sending it on an air flight.

ya know, I could predict when my mother would get a letter when she had her condo in Colorado. I could put a letter in the mail on Monday before the mail was picked up at the GMF (general mail facility). They'd sort it and have it on the plane the next day to either Albuquerque or Denver. It'd be sorted again and put on a plane or truck to Durango. It'd be in Durango that night (Tuesday) and thrown and delivered on Wednesday. If you don't know the term "thrown" that's when the mail is sorted for deliver - yes, I had a friend in the post office.

I'm sure this is the correct route, just seems strange to me, I'm one of those "as the bird flies" type gals...
