Saw this on our paper,30,000 calls for just 1 apartment to rent. Finding a cheap apartment to rent in Zurich is almost impossible, they almost never come on the market and when they do,securing it is another impossibility. I once went to view an apartment,l queued for ca 30 minutes just to get in the apartment to view. They say looking for and finding an affordable apartment in Zurich takes on average 2 years. If l had the money, i`d buy apartments in Zurich then rent them out. How is rental in your place?

Rental in our area isn't as bad as this, that's for sure. Housing must be really short. Is anything being done about it?

@miniam Are there any 'average' commuting times? And is public transport good?

@JudyEv Peak hours are so crowded, but not like in some places i have seen, what i mean is,we do prefer to have no one sitting next to us in trains an at peak hours, all seats are taken so it feels very crowded. Off peak hours are very comfortable to travel, trains and buses have enough space to travel comfortably. Going to work in the mornings, im mostly the only person in the bus because i work on the opposite direction from the city so people are going to the city,im going the opposite direction.

Zurich has always been very expensive. In our area you can find apartments to rent at a much more reasonable price.

@miniam This morning we had to go to the Lugano Hospital, about 35 Km from home. The appointment was at 8:45, we moved from home at 6:30 and arrived ONLY 5 minutes earlier. We have 60,000 people coming in each day from Italy and they are ALL on this road in the morning.

I know, but in Tessin, jobs are also hard to come by because people come from Italy.Same with Basel, alot of people coming in from France and German to work in Basel.

I live in what is called 'the city of trees'.Be'cause of all the apartment complexes I think they should change that to 'the city of apartment complexes'.

@miniam ......I don't care for high rises although it would make more apartments available.

that is another thing they should do here,we dont have many apartment complexex, i feel if they build most apartment complexes to 5,6,7 or even 10 floors,it will make things easier, most houses in zurich are not highrise

@celticeagle High rises can really reduce housing shortage and maybe reduce rents

Sounds like "buying apartments in Zurich for rent" is a good business plan, you need to figure how to acquire the seed money.

@miniam Robbing the bank is not a good idea. It's not that the banks don't need to be taken down a peg or two, they do. The way they stifle good ideas is a crime. But robbing the bank will have you land in jail, not a good idea. Winning the lottery and turning that money into a property fortune is an excellent idea.

@pgiblett Lol winning the lottery happens to OTHER PEOPLE, not to us or the people we know.

Time to rob a bank lol but i read somewhere that the average robbers get in 1 robbery is just $47000(or less? not sure of the figure exactly, maybe it`s $4,700) which i think is not worth the effort. .Since my family dont have big bucks,i have to hope my chance in the lottery lol

The same thing happens in large cities here. My son lives in New York City. The demand is greater than the number of housing, so the prices have skyrocketed.

@miniam I would love a little foreign village to live in. I don't blame you. I also wish I could live in NYC on weekends only. I love the restaurants, museums, shopping, and Broadway shows. Oh well.

So true, i dont see myself living in a big city again, im too old for the hustle and bustle plus, not ready to pay so much for something i dont even need.I mean i go to work in the morning, come back at night, tired then it`s shower ,food, some TV and bed,why should i rent so expensively. I now live in a little quiet village, i pay a fraction of what i paid in Zurich.

No problem here where we live. I just wonder why builders don't buy more apts for people? Is this a lack of land?

Rentals are everywhere where I live. If I were in Zurich I would be buying land and building apartment buildings.
