Another terrorist attack? A passenger plane has disappeared over the Mediterranean Sea.

I just read that a passenger plane bound from Paris to Cairo disappeared over the Mediterranean Sea yesterday. It was a relatively new Egyptair Airbus 320, and was cruising at 37,000, when it disappeared from radar. It was only 30 minutes from landing, meaning that it was about to begin its descent into Cairo. The fact that it disappeared from radar in an instant suggests a catastrophic explosion, most likely due to a bomb of some sort. There are about 70 people on board, and no wreckage has been found yet. Has the civilized world been victimized by another senseless act of terrorism? Probably so, though we don't know for sure at this point.

It really is. I want to visit friends in Israel, and I'm half scared to do so.

@TheHorse My friend lives in Israel, and I refuse to visit her. I've been afraid since a friend was blown up in a bus bombing on a visit. I don't know where to travel anymore. I'm so afraid.

@DianneN Many of the people I work with at the preschool in Berkeley are either Israeli or have family in Israel. They go there regularly. But the Middle East in general still scares me--I admit it. I wish they'd put Israel in North Dakota or something. But it wouldn't have the same historical significance to the Jewish people.

So will I. Gathering information about the crash is my way of feeling "in control" when I actually feel very helpless about the situation.

I find that odd too, given how much technology is available.

Now they're saying that the plane performed some bizarre maneuvers before plunging from 37,000 feet to 9,000 feet and then disappearing from radar. This seems to suggest that the plane didn't just explode at 37,000 feet. Perhaps someone somehow invaded the cockpit, leading to the bizarre maneuvers.

@Daljinder That's what I'm thinking too. Perhaps one of the pilots wanted to head to the bathroom before descending from 37,000 ft, and that's when the terrorists entered the cockpit. All speculation, of course, but one needs working hypotheses.

I heard of the last hijacked airplane last two years about the same region or somewhere near. It must be scary for the ones affected. I wish all people in the airplane are rescued soon.

I don't think there are going to be survivors. It sounds like something pretty catastrophic happened. But we can hope.

I really do not get the point of killing a bunch of strangers. I know someone has convinced some people that this will get them into their brand of heaven. But even if that were true, what kind of a heaven would require the senseless act of murder of dozens of others as a ticket for entry?

@TheHorse Or any other kind of sense. I think some people are just psychotic. When they get together with others of the same ilk, watch out.

The jury is out as to what happened, I think. There just isn't enough evidence yet. But a horrible and sad loss of life.
