I ought to know better by now

Do you ever do something you know you shouldn't or buy something you know is totally wrong for you? I have just taken a walk to the village shop to pick up some tomatoes for my lunch. It's not a long walk - just under a mile there and back - but even so I should not have tried my new shoes. I know that I can't walk in sandals that don't have a heel strap. I know that if I try to wear 'flip flops' (or thongs for those in parts of the world that don't think they are a type of underwear) I am going to end up clenching my toes to stop the darned things dropping off. I had a very uncomfortable walk, stomping about to try to stop my fancy new sandals falling off. The only thing I can say in their defense is that I got them HEAVILY discounted at an outlet centre for just £5 (down from £50ish). They look great but if I can't walk in them, they're not so great. So they'll be strictly for wandering round the garden or wearing indoors. I've known for at least 30 years that I can't walk in shoes like this so why why why did I buy them? Idiot.

I bought a nice pair of boots while I was away on the weekend. They were in a recycling store and $20 instead of heaven knows how much. So I am pretty pleased too. But I wouldn't want to walk miles in them either.

Of course you are heading into boot season as we are heading out of it.

When going for walks even short ones, I stick to my trusted running/jogging/walking shoes with laces to hold my foot securely.

I would normally do that too. I think I got a little 'over confident' after walking round the village in Crocs a few times.

Shoes or sandals that look great are rarely comfortable. I only wear them when I am going to be sitting or doing very little moving around.

@boiboing there are walking shoes, hiking shoes, and sitting shoes.

@ElusiveButterfly According to some people, there are also 'bedroom shoes' but I've never had any of those.

To be honest, these LOOK really comfortable. And they are - so long as I don't try to actually walk in them.

haha, next time you walk around in this pair of sandals before you go out to buy shoes! If your head cannot remember the simple rule, maybe your feet can remind it.

@boiboing Yes, that is good. Since you have paid for them, you might as well make full use of them.

I think I may use them as indoor 'slippers' for the summer.

It's hard to resist such a bargain, isn't it? I have eventually learnt to buy only comfy shoes - my wardrobe is full of the other kind - must take them to the charity shop.

I think I'll pass these to my sister. She has wider feet than me and I think she'll be able to wear them better than I can.

Maybe a psychiatrist could help you with this problem. But they'd cost more than a pair of non-reduced sandals. :-(

It's my feet that have the problem, not my brain!

@boiboing But it's your brain that's responsible for buying wrong shoes and thusly torturing your feet.

I'm pretty much the same when it comes to sandals. Have to have that heel strap. As far as flip flops go, I hate them with a passion.

I do that now and then, a shoe is cute, so I get it, then can hardly wear

I only buy shoes that work with my orthotics, so there is no danger of me buying or wearing shoes that might fall off, or require me to do something to keep them on, but then, they aren't cute either.

You were probably just excited to wear them cause they're new- So just keep them for looking good and visiting and not for shopping--ha!

I also make the same mistake as you do and I will beat myself up by asking why I bought them in the first place, knowing they're never comfortable.

I don't buy high shoes either - at least I have the sense to remember I can't walk in them.
