Photo taken by me – The Three Lions Pub, Castlefield, Manchester
Preston, England
May 23, 2016 1:59pm CST
I had a job interview this morning for a part time temporary litter picking role, at open air rock concerts in the city, though the night shift hours are poor. They asked me lots of close questions including my bank details and the name of my family doctor so they can check my health status? Again I find myself hoping it’s a job I don’t get. Afterwards I collected pub signs in Manchester and from the lists I have of pub signs gleamed from various books and online pub review sites I now have every sign in the city centre (though with many more to track down in the suburbs and surrounding towns). One unexpected find was the added sign for The Three Lions inn in the Castlefield, Manchester district, as this pub has only just changed to this British football related name from its established name, The White Lion, which I already have in my collection. It was only by chance that I sat down on a bench outside the pub and noticed the change. Arthur Chappell

I know that the modern trend is for pubs to have more inspiring names, but I always find it sad when an established house is given a new name. It strikes me as a significant loss of our recent history.

@arthurchappell Precisely, but the previous name most likely dates back a long time. To me appending a new name affects it's heritage.

A bit different from the 'three lions' you'd expect to see on an old pub sign.

@JudyEv The Three Lions is a very iconic emblem on England football Squad football shirts - there is a (very good) football song called Three Lions that makes very good use of the symbol.

@arthurchappell The different teams have some great theme songs, don't they?

@JudyEv most football songs are awful - this was a rare exception. There are only a few others worth listening to

They really asked you those questions? I wouldn't want to work for them either.

@teamfreak16 I would have walked out but I have to be very careful about not being seen rejecting work as that can affect my welfare entitlements

@arthurchappell - Oh, I understand completely. It just seems a little invasive.

@Jessicalynnt they will pay right to an account but they usually give you the job before requesting details

@Hate2Iron that's a risk I face too

I'd be wary of any place that wanted my bank account details before they'd offered me a job! But I'm just paranoid!

@Poppylicious me too, though the really odd one was their desire for direct contact with my doctors

Things tend to happen for a reason. If you hadn't set down there you may have missed this change.

Well, the job doesn't sound like an enjoyable one, so no loss if you do not get it. They sure do ask a lot of questions.

If you don't want the job then I hope you don't get it either. That's a great pub sign.
