The scorching heat of Sun is breaking records in India this year. During daytime, it becomes nearly impossible to step out of the room with AC, as the rest of the house gets as hot as an oven. The region where I live, the temperature sometimes rises to 47 degree centigrade! In such conditions, we are compelled to make some extra efforts to keep our houses cool. Here I suggest some basic ways that might be of some help during summer time. * CHOICE OF LIGHTER COLOURS – Colours play a vital role in trapping heat. Darker colours absorb more heat as compared to lighter colours that on the contrary reflects back the same. So, in summer use of lighter colours like white, cream, peach, sky blue, etc. should be preferred to darker colours for bed sheets, sofas, curtains, clothes, colours on the walls and every possible interior. * CROSS VENTILATION IN HOUSE - Keeping all the doors & windows open during the cooler time of days like early morning & late evening could help a lot, as during this time the air is free from harsh heat of the Sun & is much more soothing. Cross ventilation takes out the excess humidity, keeping the place cooler. * GROWING PLANTS ON TERRACE AND BALCONY – If you have extra balcony area use it to the utmost to for growing small plants, which would not only add to the beauty of your house but also comfort by bringing down the temperature around. The same can be applied on terrace by placing plastic sheets beneath to avoid any kind of leakage. The mud & plants would absorb the direct heat of the Sun thereby keeping the slab a lot cooler. * BLINDING EXTRA WINDOWS & OPENINGS – During the most heated, noon hours of the day, it is wise to keep the windows, doors, ventilators or any extra opening of the house closed or blinded. The unnecessary sunlight coming from these openings at this time of day warms up the entire house. Blinds acts as an insulator to heat from the Sun. There are various kinds of beautiful blinds available in the market that could not only save your house from direct sun-rays but also add to the beauty of your interior. * WHITE WASHING THE TERRACE – White is the most soothing colour & is of immense utility in summer as it does not trap sunlight but reflects it back thereby keeping the place cool. Being directly exposed to sunlight for the maximum time of day, our roofs trap the maximum heat. White washing it would act as a protective layer from Sun that would ultimately keep the slab cool & help in bringing down the temperature of the house. These are some ways, which I follow during summer. Hope this could be of some help. If anyone of you have any other advice in the same context, it is open – heartedly welcome!

We haven't gotten to the heat of summer yet, but I can relate to some of the things you mentioned - cross ventilation in morning and evening and keeping the doors and windows closed during the hottest time of the day. I also don't wear dark clothes in summer. One thing we did when we were living on Guam many years ago was to hose down the roof. That also made the inside cooler.

I think India would be a bit too hot for me, unless I could swim all the time.

Hahaha...!!!! Yes, you are right. India is indeed very hot and you will definitely have to swim all the time to cope up with the temperature over here. By the way, what is the maximum ranging temperature in summer time at your place?
