Iris Reflections

This past Saturday my husband myself and my nephew went on a 3 days camping and fishing trip. It was hot and humid but the fishing was great. I think we arrived at the lake a few days after the great gnat hatch. They were awful but I have to say not quite as awful as the day of the gnat hatch. I was there one year just as they hatched and it was the most awful thing I have ever encountered while out fishing. I had to go and get head nets as they were in my ears, eyes, nose and mouth. I could barely fish for trying to get the gnats off my face. The irises were blooming around the lake and I got a few shots of them. So pretty to see the reflection of the beautiful purple in the water. I hope you all enjoy them as much as I did.

@fishtiger58 They are bad here to, in places. By the pond you won't find one, but if you go by the garden you will find them.

@AbbyGreenhill Wow how strange, they seem worse on the lake to me. Strange how things differ from area to area.

And that is a wonderful thing. The gnats were just as bad in camp. Couldn't get away from them until dark.

That is the problem with lovely scenes like you photographed: all the bugs!

They were pretty awful. I did wear the head net for a time while out in the boat fishing. They were not as bad as they can be but still bad enough.

@fishtiger58 At "least" it was just gnats and not mosquitoes.

@JohnRoberts So true, oddly enough there we no mosquitoes out there. But I'm sure they are coming glad they weren't there this past weekend,

I have never seen them grow wild like in your photo. There is so much green and the blooms look so small.

I'm beginning to wonder if the flower seeds we buy are all GMOs @fishtiger58 it just seems to me that the ones we buy produce bigger blooms than the ones in the wild.

I have fished this lake many many times, never saw them growing wild before. I'm uncertain why. They were much smaller than the ones I grow in my garden.

@rebelann I have to agree with that, those irises were very small. I don't think I have ever seen the blooms that small before.

@fishtiger58 I am sure that there are flowers along the shores of the lake, but I would be unable to say which flowers.

I gather the iris are growing wild round the edge of the water. I didn't realise they did this. It's a lovely photo.

That's a lovely picture. Do the gnats hatch all at once? They would really spoil things for me

I think the gnats do all hatch at once. A few years ago when we were there just as they hatched I got a video of them they were just that thick. It was unbelievable and we ended up going home early as I just couldn't take it anymore. I was positively crying they were so bad. Thanks glad you like my shot.

@crazyhorseladycx I hope never to see one again lol. I know that won't happen. Here's a little bit of information on bugs for ya. For every human on the planet there are approx. 1 billion bugs, that's per person yikes. I shudder at the thought.

Thankfully we missed the really bad part of the gnat hatch but they were still irritating. Odd I have never noticed them before we have probably fished that lake at least 20 times.

I'm so glad you got to go on your long awaited trip. Would bug spray have kept the gnats away? You outdid yourself with this photo!!!!!! I wish I could have a copy for my daughter in law.

When I fish that particular lake I am always armed with my head net or I would lose my mind. Thanks I love the reflection in the water of the color.

I wish I'd been able to snap a photo of the irises that are in bloom right now over at my old house. They are a deep purple with some yellow and they smell gorgeous! I've always loved them and they've been growing at that house for as long as I've been alive. They are another thing I will miss, that's for sure.

@fishtiger58 i mean to say, in your picture, it seemed the waters are agitated, could it be that there were fishes swimming in that area? but now looking closely, indeed there were weeds in the waters.

If you are talking about what's close to the shore that is weeds that grow there. But there could have been some fish under those weeds trying to stay out of the sun.

A good question. We have tried everything to keep the gnats away nothing seems to work on them except a head net. And those nets are so hot is unreal. Glad you like my pic.
