Giving out phone numbers without owners consent

United States

Have you ever given a phone number to someone without the owners consent? Do you get upset to receive calls you shouldn't? This morning I woke up to a former co worker who told me she was going in for a job interview and thought about me, so she gave them my number. Not as a reference but as a person who's interested. That's very thoughtful but I have no clue on the job, position, or am I prepared. When it comes to phone numbers, I don't share them with anyone - I respect the owners privacy and always get consent prior to giving their number. For instances if someone asks me for someone's number I have - I will call them up or text them to see if it's fine. Other situations like direct family (no) I don't have to ask because sometimes like say my grandma gets confused from her phone book. She's trying to call my mom but she's called me, then I'll just tell her the number to save her time from calling the other numbers.

Only my parents & siblings know my number. I warned them not to give it to anyone. If I see a someone (not my parents/siblings) calling me, I don't answer it and delete the number immediately. Also, I immediately delete messages not coming from my family. I don't even bother reading it. I don't also give my parents' or siblings' digits to anyone.

That's good only your parents and siblings know your number and to not give it out. Do you Often get random callers or texts? I woke up to a text message saying I gave your number to the rep. But still she should have consulted with me. I don't like receiving random callers too. I've had my phone number for over 15 years.

@infatuatedbby Yes, they are the only ones who know it. I'm not into phones actually. Yep, I do but I don't answer them so those numbers/messages just end up being deleted.

@rina110383 Do you have a block feature on your phone? I block all unwanted numbers.

I don't give out anyone's phone number unless i have been given permission to do so. But yesterday I got a call from someone looking for one of my friends because she gave them my number for a reference. I didn't mind, I just have no idea who the people are that called.

Or if a number is given out. It would be nice to get a quicker heads up on who so you know who you're talking to.

I would have called you and told abut the job. I don't like having my number given out. I get enough idiotic calls as it is I try to live by the Golden Rule. If I expect others to respect me, I respect them unless they prove to be someone I don't respect.

I don't like my number given out to a complete stranger. I never gave her information or number to anyone either. I'd like that respect also.

I have never done it because of something that happened to me. When I was in high school, a boy had a crush on me. He was a bit weird and I wasn't interested. He apparently wanted my number but was too shy to speak to me, so he asked one of my teachers. Would you believe my teacher gave this boy my phone number?!?!?!?! I was sooooo angry.

Wow I cannot believe the teacher freely handed your number. Do you think he made an excuse like that's my cousin and im catching a ride home but can't find her? Or some sort of excuse?

@Lolaze I definitely agree. That is confidential. No one should know unless it's your parents.

@infatuatedbby He was a very bad teacher and got fired at the end of the year. No matter what excuse he made, he never should have been given my number!

I do not like to receive a call and having listen to them. Unless absolute emergency, I detest it when someone calls me. So, no I would not want my number given out like that.

If it's an emergency situation, I guess I'd have to without owners consent but I agree, I would not want my number to be given out freely.

I don't like giving my phone number to other people. When someone is calling me and it's not on my contact list I don't answer the call unless they sent me a text message.

That's a good way to go. If it's important they'd leave a voice message or text.

I wont' give out a phone number but usually will ask for the persons number and have the person they are trying to contact call them instead. This way I'm not in the middle if someone doesn't want their number to be given out

Yes I totally understand and thats a good solution. Ask for their card or number and tell them if my friends interested I will tell her to contact you or something. I don't want to give people's numbers out and I hope those with my number can respect that too.

Very thoughtful indeed but she should of told you about the job and had you apply or talk to these people on your own, I think that was kind of rude of her to do that

She didn't contact me until night time 10pm which I was already in bed and did not notice the call. She could have notified me sooner too. It is very thoughtful but I don't like my numbers given out.

I never give out anyone's personal information without asking their permission first. I think it's very rude. I had a friend give out my phone number to someone and then ask me afterwards if it was ok. Well, it was a little late to be asking me that...

Yeah I know what you mean. Kind of late to tell me she gave it out too. She didn't even say if it was ok. Just by the way if a girl named so, so calls I gave your number out because I remember you were interested.. Gee, thanks right?!

The former work mate was so kind to think of you but also careless in my opinion? what make her think you want the job without first talking to you? Like you l never give phone numbers,if someone asks, l will take their number, then give it to the person they wanted the number if he/she wants contact he/she will call. I do get offended if someone gives my number without asking me first,so l do not give people`s number out without asking them.

I know what you mean. It is very thoughtful to think of me, but you have to ask me prior to giving my number to a complete stranger who may or may not call. Still, they have my contact info and I do not know the person at all.

@miniam I don't think they'll call me as I have not received any calls. And even if I do - I won't pick up and block. Still, I don't like my number given out like that.

Depends on who is asking and who owns the number. When I was a secretary of course I should know to whom I will give my boss's number without asking permission everytime. If a new client called at office landline and I know it is very important I give my boss's cellphone number if he is out. I screen callers/ visitors carefully before giving any info or other contact details of my boss. For personal, I have no problem I just ignore unwanted calls/msgs or block them. No big deal. I am using prepaid cellphones and I can change number anytime I want. I use more than one cellphone and one is private.

That is good you screen calls for your boss. I am sure your boss will not be happy with solicit calls. For my personal, I have had my number for over 10 years so I don't want unwanted calls.

I like to keep our phone numbers as private as possible, and I hate calls for sales people and politicians. Someone said they had a whistle and blew it in answer to those phone calls. That's a idea.
