Hair in our Food

Philippines

My husband and I joined my family for a celebratory lunch at one of the buffet restaurants near our place. My mom loves going to the place because she commends them for the food though they only have a few selections. We did not mind that and I personally had my favorites on the dishes that I ate. My husband enjoyed it too. He came back from getting another round of food from the buffet when I noticed that there was a single hair on his mixed veggies. I immediately removed the whole thing on his dish and called the attention of the server. I told him about what we saw. He immediately when to their kitchen and afterwards came back with a reply from the chef. "It could be from the guests and not from the kitchen" I got dismayed but also told him that I just want to call their attention so that they would be aware that it was on the food. My sister could not accept the explanation and just laugh it off. I think it came off as if we wanted to get a free meal but in reality, I just want them to know. What do you think, mylotters?

How did the server becomes sure that it came from the guest and not in their kitchen. He was very defensive in his answer.

That is what we thought too. Unfortunately, I was not able to take a picture and show him how the hair was positioned in my husband's dish. I felt it should have been acknowledged rather than giving that answer.

The chef was probably right. I know that at the buffet we frequent, everyone behind the counter has head covers on. But the food is out in the open where pretty much anything can get on it from the customers serving themselves. I try not to think about it, because I love buffets.

They do have the head covers but I saw some food attendant carriers who had their hair loose when placing the food. We were still chill about it but just want them to make note. We love buffets too!

I don't know how it is in the Philippines but it use to be all people working in a restaurant having anything to do with food had to wear hairnets including men and the latter weren't allowed beards, mustaches, etc. I don't think that rule applies anywhere anymore! As a restaurant worker you did the right thing as a customer--the chef didn't handle it right at all!

It is the same. We all have safety procedures in food handling and I did see the food servers who were taking out the food with hairnets. However, what I have noticed it some of them, their hair were loose and the men have moustaches and beards. I actually think the chef should have approached us but I guess he thought it was not that important and maybe because we did not react violently.

Hair on the food kills the appetite for sure but leaving the food open with too many diners around is also not a healthy choice - siva

That is true but since it's a buffet, they usually have food covers as well. I don't know if during that time, it was left open because I was not with my husband. It did not ruin my husband's appetite but it was a good thing, I was done.

You did the right thing but the least the chef could have done was apologize and not reason out. Accepting fault would always beget understanding.

That is true but I guess they think otherwise.

It was very impolite of your sister to behave like that. It's better to avoid such dinner parties.

Actually my sister laughed when the attendant left the table for about 10 mins ago. However, if you think about it, we need to speak up about the issue right? It's a criticism that restaurants should take constructively and make sure that they have the proper sanitary procedures in place.

I just wanted them to make a note of it. We did not mention it just so it can be a free meal. I felt like we were calm about it. I was thinking if it happen to someone else who gets hysterical with these kinds of issues.
