School Dress Codes: I once had to wear a loaner tee!

From when I was in school compared to today's fashion - I could see why dress codes are being more enforced. Walking into popular stores for teens/young adults like Forever 21, Hollister, Abercrombie and Fitch which I do still shop at, you don't often find that .. two fingers width of coverage on the shoulders of a tank top, shorts above the knees. You will often find clothes that have thin straps, strapless, cleavage, crop tops, cut-outs, revealing of the legs, tight clothing and so forth. Back in high school, I normally wear tank tops (not of two fingers width) but I always had a light cardigan over so I would not get in trouble. However, during the end of the year, summer was approaching so it was hot. I got a "ticket" while going to another class during passing period. I had to wear a loaner tee. I didn't have a cardigan that day, but it was not even revealing. You get sent to the office and wear a pe shirt that says Loaner on the front throughout the day and have the tee washed to collect your tank top back. When you were in school, did you follow your school's dress codes? If you wore something inappropriate did the school provide a loaner tee or you had to go home and change?

When I was in high school, we had a school uniform. I was reprimanded once because I had a long skirt. I didn't follow the length for the skirt. I was called at the principal's office together with my friend. Our skirts were cut by the nun using a pair of scissors.

Wow even in high school very strict. I would think they'd be happy if your skirt was longer than it's supposed to be? So the nun cut the skirt to the appropriate length?

@rina110383 That's strict. Did you get to go home and stitch the skirt or did she cut it and stitched the skirt so it'll have a nice seam line.

@infatuatedbby The nuns wanted us to observe the proper length for uniformity purposes. Yes, she cut it.

We have school uniforms in all schools. Students knew how to manipulate that too. Shortening the skirts. Pulling the socks down. Re-arranging the shirts. LOL Creativity!

@infatuatedbby Only with the skirt. It was below knee. Made it short about an inch above knee-length.

@valmnz Yes to be honest I think it's a good idea. No one to make fun of since everyone's wearing the same clothing. And so much more!

@infatuatedbby it wasn't fun, believe me, but now, as an adult, I think it was definitely a good idea.

I guess better a "loaner" tee than a "loner" tee ! Dress codes are very strict these days - and yes, I can see why too. Well my high school days were a long time ago, so fashion wasn't quite so skimpy as it is today - I can't remember any incidents where students got in trouble for the way they dressed. Wait - I remember back then controverial t-shirts with sayings were not allowed, and a couple kids had to wear their shirt inside out for the rest of the day. I think all of our parents would have freaked out if we walked out the door dressing the way some of these kids (and not just kids) do now.

It's been 8 years since I graduated from high school, and the fashion trends has definitely changed. And, I agree the clothing now is more skimpy. I am older now and do not dress like that. Though it's fine depending where you go but I prefer to be covered up. And if I do wear something revealing or what I call revealing, I'll have a cover up or light cardigan or something. Controversial t-shirts aren't allowed, I do remember some wearing their shirts inside out. What I disliked most was baggy pants with boys boxers, not cute ha!

@much2say If I were to have guessed, I wouldn't have known. We can't tell our ages from the style we talk, hehe. He-he if I had to compare 80's to now, 80's is a lot more conservative, way more! And I agree - I have no idea how that trend came upon. Saggy, Baggy Pants with Boxers revealing. Not hot!

@infatuatedbby Maybe it's an Asian thing . . . not only do we look younger than we really are - maybe we talk younger too Yah, the 80s just had their own look . . . I guess it was conservative - well, except for the colors (some of those colors were so neon and bright !). I don't know how fashion started becoming so sloppy and trashy - but who knows . . . maybe someday they'll go backwards and become conservative again!

We did have a dress code at the private school I went to. I always followed the rule, except for one day. My parents said my dress was long enough but the school disagreed so they called my father to bring me something else to wear for the day. I was embarrassed and never let that happen again.

I didn't go to a private school, but I understand rules are enforced there. I am sorry to hear the school disagreed. If parents thought it's appropriate enough it should have slide! My mom thought my clothes were fine but schools think otherwise. Now.. the rules are more enforced because of the new fashion trends plus they look up to their celebrities and what not. I feel the younger generation is a lot different then when I went to school.
