Pesky, Noisy Birds

Our property is quite isolated with Australian bush forming two or our boundaries and our nearest neighbours down the hill and nearly out of sight. But the last two days it has been very noisy here because of the pesky black cockatoos. The black cockatoo is endemic to Western Australia. Some of the subspecies are believed to be so close to extinction that they probably cannot be saved. The Carnaby's and Baudin's black cockatoos have white tail panels and white patches on the cheeks. The Forest Red-Tail has red panels in the tail. When the latter spread their tails to land in a tree they always look as though they have their brake-lights on. Baudin's cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus baudinii) has a longer upper beak than does the Carnaby. The fine point on the tip of the beak allows the bird to prise open gumnuts from the redgum or marri. The genus name means 'hidden beak' as the bird can fluff up the feathers to conceal the beak from view. We see all of these in the bush around our property but it is the Baudin's that are causing the noise at the moment. Even when feeding they chatter away quietly to themselves, or maybe to each other. They often leave a messy pile of half-eaten gumnuts, twigs and leaves under the trees in which they have been feeding. Despite calling them 'pesky' earlier, we are quite fond of them really. Much of this post appeared in Bubblews so I'm hoping the text isn't hiding away somewhere waiting to expose me as a plagiarist.

I think you are pretty safe that site seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. That is a very pretty bird.

@JudyEv I see what you mean by the tail feathers looking like tail lights on a car.

@just4him The ones here at the moment have white tails. There are some over East that have yellow tails. I wonder how these differences came about? I'll be away now for a week or more so hope things go well.

I can imagine that they are quite raucous birds. I think you are safe regarding the content, as JJ said that stuff from Bubblews isn't live anywhere on the net now, even if it's on that 'Wayback' site. I've re-written some of my posts from there too.

That was my understanding too. Some days these birds are VERY raucous even though the trees are a little distance from the house.

I remember you posted about this funny bird in Bubblews, anyway do not fear, the content does not appear hiding anywhere. You have not plagiarized yourself.

@JudyEv LOL, soon after Bubblews shut down the site, I have seen several users who "plagiarized" themselves. Their articles were still indexed and they re posted here.

@LadyDuck That was what was worrying me but eventually someone said all the posts had gone completely.

I guess because they do so much damage in the orchards that a great many have been shot over the years. Hopefully the damage can be reversed.

I have edited and used my Bubblews posts too, not to worry, they are gone! I can imagine you are fond of the birds, no matter what noise and mess they make. Sad to hear one is almost gone for good.

Did you do a search for it to make sure it was de-classified or whatever the term is?

I read here somewhere that someone said they had all gone so that was good enough for me. I didn't know how to do an indepth search.

These are a bit different I think. We have mynas in the East. I think they are trying to keep them out of WA.

It won't since Bubblews is no more, and it's your own text. Very interesting about the black cockatoo. I was unaware that some of this species was close to extinction. So I take it that's a gumnut in his beak.

It's hard to see but it's bound to be a gumnut. You can see more around and behind him.

Are these cockatoos very annoying and messy that you want to shoo them away?

Not really. There are no trees really close to the house. But some days they seem to screech and squawk a lot.
31 May 16
Your cockatoos look like Indian cockatoos and crows. They are black and cause a lot of noise.

@JudyEv Thanks Judy, the crows in Kolkata bring chapatis from outside, immerse them in the water and then eat them. I keep some water in a plate for the birds in the balcony.

I've only seen a black cockatoo once and that was at the previous mentioned Yuragir National Park. There were 3 of them in some trees on top of a rocky outcrop. They were very elusive and I was unable to obtain a photo.

@JudyEv No, I could see what they were but I was not close enough to determine much. The foliage was in the way too. The info signs were really the only clue I had as to what they were but i cannot remember details...this was over 20 years ago.

Did you happen to notice what colours were in their tails? There are yellow-tailed ones in the eastern states but not here.

@epiffanie You usually only see the colour in their tails if they are landing and spread their tail feathers. There is a photo of a red-tail in my reply to Belle Starr's comment.

We have starlings in the eastern states - not sure if they're the same. They are desperately trying to keep 'our' sort out of the west and rangers on the edge of the Nullarbor when the state begins shoot any that make the trip across the desert.
