Yes, I know, you find it hard to believe that I could have done this, me too!! But I am guilty!! Oh so guilty. It started out simply enough I left my home on the way to water exercise. We were driving down the road and there was workmen cutting trees along the road and we had to move over. I saw something in the road but I thought it was just some debris. At least I did until I was almost on top it and then I realized, it was a turtle. I had nowhere to go and then I heard the crunch, oh no, I had run over the turtle with my car. That crunching sound told the whole story. I feel really bad, I never like to kill any animal and I have no aversion to turtles even though in our area it could very well have been a snapping turtle. I need to talk to @thehorse about this, I may have to turn myself in. I have now gone from plantacide to turtle killing!! Who knows where this is going next!! You might not be wanting to meet me for tea!! Have you ever turned your car into a lethal weapon? I am sure there is probably a picture of me on the wall at the turtle post office, most wanted woman!!

Ouch - I winced at that crunch! Love your made-up word. I killed a deer once that launched itself at my car. Not pleasant.

@jaboUK Oh yes, I don't know if you remember but I did write an article about the deer that killed my Chevy Prism, my son-in-law John had borrow my car and he hit a deer. My car was a total loss.

I have and felt bad too. I was out fishing in my boat with my girlfriend and we left the lake at dusk. Apparently it was frog mating season and they were all over the road leading out. I mean hundreds. I had a boat on the back of my car. I drove really really slow and tried to dodge all the frogs. Not to be. I ran over a huge bullfrog and that sound will haunt me forever. That was probably 20 years ago and my girlfriend and I still talk about that.

Oh yah, awful sound. It really is hard when they make it unavoidable.

They close a road in Tilden Park here for several weeks each year because mating salamanders use it as a "promenade."

@BelleStarr I would have had to have sat there all night there were so many frogs on that road leading out from the lake.

I have run into a couple of posts, but that does not count.

No but it is easier to deal with fixing your car rather than knowing you killed a turtle.

I think it may be enough if you seriously repent and send some money to an animal shelter. In this way, you may avoid severe punishment. :-)

I ran over a raccoon once. It was in the middle of my lane. There was a dropoff on one side and oncoming traffic on the other. I had nowhere to go. On the way back, I saw another raccoon standing over it, weaving back and forth. I felt so bad but there was nothing I could do. It still makes me sad to think about it.

That really is sad I wonder if it was a family member? Or are racoon scavengers and it looked like its next meal?

@BelleStarr I think it was sad. Maybe it was its mate or child. I felt so devastated. I just cried all the way home and the rest of the night, too.

For shame! (That was just for the public to see.) I'm sorry this happened to you. I may have committed Bambicide once in Montana. If need be, I will harbor you until the case blows over. I'll send you directions to my compound in secret code.

I have actually stopped to avoid hitting, yes you guessed it, a butterfly. I did hit a chipmunk once and it made me sick knowing I ran it over. Don't know what I would do if I hit a deer.

I came very close with the deer but somehow avoided it, I didn't realize it was a turtle until too late and I did feel sick about it.

We once had a cute frog that lived in our shed, until one wet day it turned up squashed under where we park our car, I don't know if it was me or my husband but we were both gutted. On a side note, you have wide turtles near you, wow.

As a teen who drove like a crazy women living in the country I did kill a few woodchucks and one skunk. I became very careful after the skunk... Sorry that happened to you, I would feel really bad if I hit a turtle... My daughter who I renamed Mother Nature stops on her road and moves the turtles off the road into the swamp. She is in a swampy area and the babies are born in the dirt on the side of the road. She makes sure they get back into the water when she sees them. Once she tried to move a full grown off the road and it tried to get her hand, (snapping turtle) now she had a broom in the back of her car.. to make them get off the road...

Oh lordy no @BelleStarr . It's a heart-breaker to smoosh a critter. In my 54 years of driving, I accidentally killed 1 rabbit and 1 cat. Both incidents were at night and the critters ran in front of me and I couldn't do anything but cry all the rest of the way home.

That is sad. The crunching would make me feel ill I think. I've run over snakes but they don't cause me a lot of grief but I'd hate to squash a title. At least it wasn't intentional. And what a great new word I've learnt today.

I made it up from the species and the act of killing it. It may or may not be real lol I did feel terrible, if it was a snake I would have screamed and pulled my feet up off the floor of the car lol I loath snakes.

Oh my! I don't drive and so I have not experienced that. But you know what? I have eaten a turtle when I was a child. My parents killed the turtle and the meat was forced to be eaten by me ( I cried while eating it) because they said in my home country that turtle meat can cure asthma. Maybe it was true because I did not have asthma attack after that.

I hit a rabbit once. I was driving along a dark country road. I didn't see the rabbit until it ran out right in front into my headlights' beam. It couldn't be avoided. Stuff happens.

I do not drive so I never killed an animal and I am very glad that this never happened. My husband killed a little bird once, the little thing crossed the road just in front of the car and he could not stop, I cried all the day long.

Although it's quite a sad state of affairs for that poor turtle of whichever variety it was, you are a funny lady, Belle. That turtle should have known he should have been elsewhere while men are working on the road. If he'd had a smell like a skunk he cold have warned everyone of his presence.
