Are These Still In Use?

My son

I was going through my old photos the other day and I came across this one of my son on his baby bouncer. I was wondering if these bouncers are still used? It is just a harness that you strapped the baby in, then clipped it on to the doorway of a room. Then the baby could bounce around as he liked. I know my son loved the sense of freedom it gave him, as he hadn't yet learnt to walk. It must have helped to strengthen his little legs too. When my daughter came along, she enjoyed it too. I'm sorry about the quality of the picture but it's pretty old - my son is 47 now.

I used one of these for both my kids, who are about the same age as your son. I also used a contraption with wheels that they would sit in and be able to wheel around on the smooth floor of the kitchen. I don't see these devices in Walmart when I'm there shopping and like you I wonder if they're still made or used these days.

@blitzfrick I remember the one you mention too - I think it was called a baby walker.

@jaboUK yes, that was it, a walker.... I wonder whatever happened to those. Maybe they'll make a comeback!

I babysit a lot and used to work in daycares. I haven't seen them in forever. Last I heard, some safety regulations stated that they weren't safe for a baby's muscle development or something like that. Personally, I don't feel there was anything wrong with them. I've never heard of a kid with problems because they bounced in a bouncer.

@missjessicadawn I think they've taken the Health and Safety thing too far nowadays. They'd stop kids from climbing trees if they could! I've never heard of bouncers doing any harm either - it certainly didn't do my children any harm. I would have thought they would have been good for muscle development, not the opposite.

@missjessicadawn Oh my - that's so stupid that you weren't allowed to even pull a splinter out! You don't exactly need to be a doctor to do that.

@jaboUK I agree about them taking safety way too far. It was a nightmare at the daycare because there was sooo much we couldn't have or do with the kids. If I child got a splinter at the daycare we weren't allowed to pull it out because they considered it a "medical procedure". We had to call the parents and have them come take care of it. It's ridiculous.

@jaboUK I had one of those chairs that they sat in and could raise up and still see me so I think they were about the same type of thing.

@Marcyaz You missed out Marcy, because I could put my son on it then carry on with my chores. He was happy as long as he could see me.

We had this one also for our 2 sons, decades ago. I think that now they have more sophisticated ones. It was so much fun watching the boys doing "their dancing".

What a darling little boy he was! My boys used that contraption, too, and it provided fun times. I haven't seen those in years. My grandkids had bouncy seats with a tray and toys built in. Fun as well.

@jaboUK @diannen i noticed that it seems to be standard now that baby/toddler stuff come with something that lights up, makes sounds, moves, etc. all the bells and whistles, so to speak.

I am not interested in knowing whether a bouncere is still in use as I cannot take my eyes off that bundle on the bouncer. That is the happiest face I have seen in years

@rebelann Yes, he was a sweet baby. He could really get energetic on the bouncer, forwards and back, up and down. He loved it, and so did I - I could get on with other things, as I'd put him onto the door of whatever room I was in.

@silvermist I had one for a boy I babysat and he did tip it over but it was on carpet so he wasn't hurt. I hate walkers and didn't use them for my kids. The boy I babysat was in his so much at home that he walked in his tiptoes for years. At 14 I think he actually still does and I know a few other adults who walk on their toes for the same reason they were in a walker to much.

@jaboUK Yes it was.But some walkers were a little dangerous,if they scoot along fast there was a tendency for them to tilt over.So you have to be in the vicinity. But the kids like it especially as they have not learned to walk.

Yes, parents still use them, but here they're usually attached to a plastic ring that sits on springs on the floor. (Hard to describe, but same effect!) My kids and grandkids all loved them.

I remember these although we didn't have one. Our son loved a little car which he sat on and could scoot around on using his feet. He'd come flying down the passage and suddenly shoot sideways through a door. We thought he was very smart!

I think my cousin had one for his little girl, when she was a baby. She's now three and no longer a baby, but if I remember correctly, they had one and brought one with them at Christmas or one of our family gatherings.

Baby bouncers similar to this are still sold by Graco. I found them available on Amazon. The desing is a bit different, as you can imagine, but the basic idea is the same.

I remember I didn't put my late niece into it properly and she flipped upside down! She didn't like her Jolly Jumper so much after that. But her little boy loved his a few years ago. It was basically the same. I don't think it went on the door frame though.
