How long is it since ..?

I had to sit down to write a note to my son's teacher a few days ago and guess what.. my handwriting doesn't look great. I used to write neatly and it would even look pretty if I took some care in those days past.. Now it seems foreign to write on paper. All my notes are made on my phone or in my laptop. This turned my thoughts in a different direction. It seems to me that the art of writing letters has been dead and buried for years now. People seem to communicate more on Facebook or texts or other phone apps these days. I can't remember when last I wrote a letter to someone on paper. I then decided to write a bit everyday.. so I don't forget how to write LOL . When last did you write a letter or write on paper ? I am not talking about writing lists but at least a page or a few pages worth of stuff with ink on paper.

The other day I wrote a draft for a business letter that would end up be typed. I also noticed how ugly my hand-writing has become...

@sishy7 We are losing our skills .. I wonder how long it would take to forget how to paint .. with all the prints and digital art we have now.

I have the same thoughts! When I write I feel like a newbie as I've been more used to typing than writing. I could not remember anymore the last time I wrote a letter lol!

@sofssu Modesty aside, i used to have perfect penmanship that my husband really admired but now, I notice that I have to write slowly to achieve that kind of penmanship but not perfectly and it was like I am just starting to learn.

@salonga Wow .. are you thinking of getting back that skill that is slipping away from your hand? I wasn't anywhere near perfect but I have received commendation for my handwriting in school and college. I feel terribly sorry now.

Sooner or later there will be a revival of writing. It is the same as the revival of adult coloring, and then the craze will be spread all over the world.

@sofssu I am not a fan of adult coloring too. I think it is a waste of time. If they make it into a card and we color the card, at least we can give it away as gift.

@scheng1 I hope it happens sometime soon.. I haven't been a great fan of adult coloring though.. I have done enough as a child.

Just like you , my handwriting isn't as beautiful as it is before in my college days . Computers made me not practice them anymore . Though , i just always use my signature on documents but seldom write .

@sofssu Because of not using my handwriting , but just typing at the computer , sometimes whenever i write , my hands seems to be unsteady already , so much so that my handwriting isn't as good as before .

@SIMPLYD Has your signature been steady? I guess it would since you sign a lot of documents.

my handwriting was legible even from grade school, but it deteriorated when jobs became more and more computerized. i mostly write lists and notes/reminders now and, even then, still make mistakes. even my signature isn't consistent.

@sofssu not sure. it seems easier to write in block letters now, instead of longhand. maybe because we mostly fill up forms now.

@hereandthere Sounds like we are really losing it.. Are you thinking of doing anything about it? Just curious.

@hereandthere That maybe another reason since the only writing we do is in block letters. I really feel we ought not to let this skill slip out of our hands.

I tend to write a letter to one of my sisters every few months now. She has Alzheimer's and does not have a smart phone or a computer with internet access. She doesn't know who I am or why I am writing to her. Her daughter tries to explain, but well.... My sister won't remember what her daughter tells her anyway, so my letters just talk about how pretty it is outside. Once in a while I get a letter from my sister. She seems to be lucid when she writes it. But, of course, by the time I get the letter, that lucid moment was days in the past.... (shrug) even getting a phone call telling me she is lucid does no good. I am two hours away from where she lives. My handwriting still looks the same as it always has.

@DaddyEvil I am so glad that you still write letters. I guess the fact that you write once a month has helped you maintain your handwriting. So sorry about your sister.. and its so nice of you to still write to her despite the fact that she doesn't even remember you.

@DaddyEvil I am doing well. You don't have to apologize for anything.. I am the same way too. I guess its easy to catch up with those who are present at the moment.

@sofssu I still write to her because on a good day, she does know who I am... It is just rare for her to have good days anymore... Yeah, I suppose that once a month letter does help me stay in practice, though. How have you been doing? I get so caught up talking with a few people here that I forget others that I like and want to keep track of. I am so sorry I do that, hon! I keep saying I won't do that, but then get caught up in the conversations others are having I forget again... I will try to do better!

That is what I've observed when I'm writing. I used to write numbers and words when I'm still working but now, when I write a draft for my discussion, I found my handwriting very ugly and even can't recognized the letters I wrote.

@sofssu I don't write letters anymore but treasure the times I used to write regularly to my mother. She was a great letter writer and it just seemed as if she was talking to you. Now we talk on the phone as she is not into computers. As for writing on paper, I still do that, part of my job. Also ,I recently took out a notebook to jot down 'discussions' and ideas. There are times when I am not connected to the net.:)
