You know you are getting old when...

When people comment that you can get down on the floor without difficulty! Yesterday morning I went on a short resuscitation course (more about that later). As part of that we went over the usual things about assessing a casualty, CPR, putting them into the recovery position etc., and of course then there was the call for a volunteer to be the 'body'. Silence from the dozen people sitting in the semi-circle, so I said 'Oh I don't mind lying on the floor' and I went ahead to play dead and be rolled around by several of the other people on the course. A bit later we split into smaller groups to practice CPR and while waiting for our turn one person commented 'You got down on the floor easily enough didn't you?' I didn't know what to say. Of course I did, and up again; I never gave it a second thought. But now I feel awfully old. I mean no-one ever comments to a young person that they can do that easily so obviously I look old enough that people expect it to be a problem. Now I keep assessing myself - every time I do something like bend down to pick something off the floor I'm thinking 'Yes I can still do that'. This is just making me feel like I'm way over the hill.

Some words linger and make us ponder. We are young as long as we are fit and independent - siva

Yes people maybe don't realise that a brief comment can make you re-evaluate yourself!

@Fleura I do this sometimes. If someone says "You've gotten better on the bass!" I think, "Wait. Was I bad last year when we jammed together?" I don't say it, though.

I already know that I am getting old so it would not matter in my case.

@Fleura You sound as though you are swimming in an Egyptian river.

Every day our Body is getting old. But not our mind. If you think you are old then it will have an impact in your body but if you think you are still young by heart and mind you will be possible to anything - its my view.

That was a pretty rude comment, involuntary, but rude anyway.

@Fleura We are not old if we do not feel old.

I don't think they meant to be rude, perhaps even intended a compliment, but it's just made me feel like I must appear really old!

Heh. I was working with a two-year-old, and I heard him grunt when he got up from a cris-cross-apple sauce (I think we used to call it Indian Style) position. I realized he was "modeling" (imitating) me!

That's funny! I have found myself doing that too, and I wondered at what age it started. But in the end I concluded that it's more about the fat around my middle that causes the expulsion of air when I bend, rather than age!

If you can get down and up without difficulty, you are not over the hill - yet! I enjoyed my CPR courses, but never had to use them, thank goodness!

Sounds like you are doing fantastically well; you see if I was 89 and they made the same comment I'd probably be pleased, but I'm only 48!

Yes, sometimes words like this can indeed make us think we really are old already . It's no denying we look like one already , but we have to accept it .

Ah! I hope they truly meant well by it. I guess they were just taken by surprise. It doesn't matter how old you are anyway, it's about taking care of your body.

I expect they meant well. Just the fact that they were surprised though means that I must look old!

The person who made that remark obviously had problems getting down on the floor herself. Personally I find it harder to get up

Now I'm evaluating everything I do to see if I can still do it!
