Do You Believe in Luck?

Looking back I can say incontrovertibly that I had some lucky breaks. Or rather, had some breaks not come my way I could have been in a more challenging situation.
So life has been kind to me overall.
That brings me to whether I believe luck has played a big part in my life. I feel it is yes and no. It is about fifty-fifty according to me. I could have been in a much smoother ride with better luck. Then again, had luck not played the part it did I would have faced more challenges that could have strengthened my resolve to persevere and succeed.
I have met few inspiring people but I might have benefited by others more positive during my younger days.
With regard to family I have no complaints. Overall, I am what I am due to the cards I have been dealt.
How has luck played its part in your lives?

things can go unexpectedly well or badly but it is chance rather than some organising sentient force that creates the luck

I try to cover all the bases but sometimes we miss out the one document that decides the outcome.
It also happens one person we meet can change our life - at a personal level the life partner and at work life, someone who is inspirational to work with - siva

I don't consider luck as an ingredient simply because it means that life is a chance. I don't look at life as a chance. I do look at life as what we make it, the choices we make, good or bad, and those choices dictate how the cards will fall, not luck.

Good and practical take.
We are dealt some cards and it is up to us to make the best use of them. Then we are on our own way.
I have seen some children having to help out their parents but they become street smart faster than those molly-coddled - siva

Agreed, Singapore is tops in many ways and the government is super efficient.
I wonder why the innocent children have to suffer so much in some places while they are showered with love and affection in most other places.
I have no answers for man's inhumanity to man - siva

A practical take, that means you own up for your actions even when you are thrown in at the deep end of the pool.
Frankly, I have a take everything I have is well deserved as long as I have worked for it.
So the fortunes and misfortunes are my own.
But my heart goes to those who suffer for no fault of theirs like chronic illnesses that reduce their quality of life - siva

@zap_81 Generally life is fair and we can face the challenges but sometimes it takes a turn tough to come to grips with the reality, sort of life/reality altering. It is not only sickness but some issues that we have no control over.
One has to be mentally strong to withstand such moments - siva

@Shiva49 Sickness is something which is painful. A couple of months back I got a viral. The viral was in the air and I just got it. no fault of mine. I was almost in tears as it was so disturbing. I guess that is where your faith in God comes in.
But sticking to your discussion , I normally like to be in control and take the responsibility rather than saying my luck was bad and his luck was good.

I will put all my effort without thinking of luck, if luck supports then I will enjoy it.

Luck and chance are the only real reason we are here isn't it.
Of course luck is a thing but l don't believe you can influence it in any way. luck and chance are synonymous to me.

One should be lucky to meet the right person and get the right opportunities.
Then it is up to us to take the chance, make a choice.
Sometimes, we are at the wrong place - like meet with accident that change our course in life.
I do not know whether I am lucky in my life but I would have persevered anyway - siva

Sometimes luck scores above hard work like meeting the right person who can make a difference to our lives. At the other extreme, we have no way out of the rut slogging away for an ungrateful boss.
I have seen a lot as I could not take much risks or be unemployed even for a day.
I feel luck plays the biggest part in the choice of our life partner.
However, sincerity and hard work seems to have paid off for me in the end with some luck thrown in - siva

@Shiva49 that's why I said 50-50 :)
The luck factor is certainly present especially for youngsters in the grueling entrance examinations to a n engineering or medical degree.Lots of of preparations and some luck.

Yes i do i've had some major surgeries in the past and i've made it thru each and every one with no problems. I have a heart condition that people with my condition haven't lived past age 12 and i'm 33 now. So i'm thankful for god watching over me and my family and i believe in luck and miracles.

I am happy for you despite the travails you have undergone. You are able to see the positive side to what has happened in your life.
We need luck to meet the right people too. The rules will be same but some help us more than others. Also to get the right doctor and support staff. Some believe we meet those we are destined to meet in times of need.
I also believe miracles do happen but we tend to overlook them - siva

With the unexpected loss of my 13 year old son to a somewhat "Fluke" of a condition (his heart was attacked by an every day sort of virus), I cannot help but feel unlucky. There was no rhyme or reason to this horrible thing happening to him and now he's gone. So I feel very unlucky.

Einstein said, and I believe that he believed it too, that "God does not play dice with the Universe."
If God doesn't play dice, why would we do so?
Why would we think that luck or chance could determine anything in our lives, given that there are laws (both physical and spiritual) that describe why things happen, or not?
That said, this would imply to me that there is no such thing as luck. The falling of the dice doesn't determine anything. The cards dealt to us are not dealt randomly, or luckily either. It is perhaps the Lords of Karma that give us the cards in our hands to play with, or at least some of them. The rest I believe that we have dealt to ourselves for this lifetime from our own souls.
Does such a thing as luck or chance really exist then, or not?
Luck plays no part in the determination of your life. It is merely a way to describe a missed understanding, or a lesser than whole understanding of all that goes together to determine the exact outcomes of our lives.
We are responsible, totally so, for all of this, and luck plays no part in anything, except for perhaps in games of chance, but then again that is only in theory, in realness who wins these games is already determined by the continuity of connection of all events to all participants at the inner level of cause and effect, or even greater than this, right down to the level of oneness, that remains in us all, but which we live from individually highlighted in our own unique ways.

In a way our lives resonates with
"There is a tide in the affairs of men.
Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;
Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.
On such a full sea are we now afloat,
And we must take the current when it serves,
Or lose our ventures."
I think we are all presented with opportune times but most do not react to seize the chances.
According to me, I would have still persevered within another set of circumstances and found fulfillment in wherever I could have ended up. The core of mine could be the same though in whatever I did or wherever I lived.
Yeah, where we are born and to whom could be connected with karma. Also with what faculties we are born with - siva
