Virginia Storm Damage

United States

The storm I wrote about on Thursday of last week did a lot of damage in some areas of Virginia. In my area we had mostly heavy downpours of rain and some wind. I heard on the news today, however, that over 10,000 homes were still without power. Thousands have been without power for several days now and the power companies are working night and day to restore power. They also said that over 430 tons of debris has been removed from streets and roads and there are at least another 100 tons of debris, mostly trees and fallen limbs, to be removed. They showed pictures of several vehicles that were under trees and limbs that also had to be removed. These vehicles are smashed under the trees and totally ruined. I worry about that here when it storms, because we have several trees near where we park our vehicles. Because of the continuous rumbling thunder that I kept hearing that evening, I was sure that there was a BAD storm near where I live, but I didn’t realize until today, just how bad the storm really was.

The storm did a quite a bit of damage. The clean up after the storm is tough but it's a blessing when no lives are perished. I hope everyone is able to get everything back to normal quickly.

Just being without power for several days is very frustrating. We have a generator and have had to use it several times in the past, mostly in winter months when the snow and/or ice breaks the trees and limbs on the power lines. Thankfully, it has not been really HOT the last few days here in Virginia.

It would be awful to be without power for too long. We can hook up a generator if the power goes off for too long.

Yes, we also have a generator, but it wouldn't be powerful enough to runthe A/C It is just enough to keep the refrigerator and freezer going and a couple lamps. We have lost power several times, but it's usually in the winter months. Once for over a week. Trees were down everywhere after and ICE storm.

@JudyEv We would be very hot in the summer if we lose power.

@IreneVincent Ours isn't too powerful either. Like yours, just the fridge and lights. But we don't often need the A/C which is good.

After the fact is when it really hits you how bad the storm was and how much damage it caused.

Yes, that's true. I really had no idea how bad it was though until I started seeing the news reports and some of the videos.

Wow, that is terrible but glad that there was no loss of lives and that you are ok.

It has been on the news constantly, but my area didn't get the brunt of the storm, for which I am glad.
