Thank God for Larry

Larry goes to the grocery store every Tuesday, as I do. His apartment is up the road from mine, so he comes to the store on a different van. When I finished paying for my groceries, I saw Larry all alone on the bench waiting for his ride home. So I went to sit with him. He usually only talks politics, and that's okay. He's a very intelligent man and I enjoy listening to him. But today he was on a totally different subject. A higher level, if you will. For some interesting reason, he wanted to talk about church and God and prayer. I rarely find people who want to talk openly about those things. We learned that we're both Catholic and while neither of us can get to church these days, we do our best to participate from our apartments. Larry told me how he set up an altar in his apartment. Another dear friend of mine has an altar set up in her home. I've never done that, but after speaking with Larry, I'm ready to do so. It seems like the perfect thing. As Larry said, there are many days when he's all alone and feeling a bit down. Rather than do something to get into trouble, he goes to his altar and he prays. And it makes a difference to how he's feeling. I just love that! Like me, he watches the Mass on TV every morning. We watch the same Mass daily as well as the same Mass on Sunday. We had a lot fun talking about the different priests we see and how the homilies affect our daily lives for the better. Spending that time speaking with Larry today really gave me a lot to feel grateful for. Larry, like me, is alone most of the time. He hates the fact that he's getting older and doesn't have anyone to go out and have fun with. We both understand that all too well. Not having a car and not having friends to be with regularly is wearing on both of us. But we found an outlet for our sadness and it helps. I know he's on Facebook and if I can find his full name (I think I have one of his websites bookmarked somewhere), I'm going to look him up. He loves playing games on Facebook and so do I. He gave me a few new ones to go and find to help keep my brain working! As they say, God works in mysterious ways. There are angels all around us. All we need to do is look for them. -Claudia- image from pixabay

@CRK109 You are the one who went to sit by him. I am sure that made his day. And if you were interested in his suggestions that is also very flattering.

No kidding! He's the first *real* friend I've found lately. He's sweet and kind and lonely. I'm glad I met him.

This sounds such a positive meeting for both of you. How nice it must have been to have this conversation after listening to all the negativity from the other ladies on your own van.

Wonderful that you both have each other to talk with. Prayers for you and Larry, that you may continue to have your paths cross. God does send people into our lives when we need them. We don't have an altar at home, we just kneel by the bed or couch. Have a blessed day friend

That's what we've always done, although these days, I can't even kneel anymore because of my bad knees. But I'm considering making an altar here. I know my other friend has her Bible on her altar, and I'd love doing that. I'm just not sure my cat would leave it alone. That's the only real concern I have about doing it.

Yes, I think so, too. He's genuine and doesn't put on airs. And that's rare these days. I've known him for a while now but today was the first day he really opened up to me about himself. And when we found out how much we have in common, he could not stop smiling!

Hoping your friendship with Larry continues and you both get to spend time together. Seems as if you both have a lot in common and enjoy each others company. My grandmother always had an altar in her house and I remember her lighting candles and us praying before bed (when I slept over)

@CRK109 Praying always induces a ton of positive vibes in us. It's a good thing that you're thinking about setting up an altar in your home. That way whenever you feel alone you can seek the company of God or as an alternative, step out of home and catch up with Larry! I hope Larry and You find the real friends in each other :)
