Tonight's Into the Groovy (#75) takes us to Cincinnati, home of Over the Rhine. Formed in 1985, Over the Rhine is primarily husband/wife duo Linford Detweiler (guitar, piano, bass,) and vocalist/guitarist Karen Bergquist. They play an agreeable, warm and inviting brand of indie rock/folk-style music, and have, in the past, toured as members of Cowboy Junkies. And although they play secular music, the band has been known to show up at Christian music festivals to perform. "Someday" is a track (#2) from their 1991 debut, Till We have Faces. It wasn't a hit (this band doesn't really have "hits," just great songs,) rather, it's one of the stronger tunes on a very good album. My discovery of Over the Rhine came in a used CD shop in the mid-90's in Boulder, Colorado. I bought their second album, Patience, because I liked the cover. Turned out to be one of the best musical gambles I've ever made.

You keep coming up with bands and songs I don't know. Maybe they were too regional to make it to LA.

You're probably right. Our old neighbour was from Ohio, and was surprised that I knew who they are.

I actually got a call from a friend of mine to help them. They bought some property outside of Cincinnati, and they heard a rumor that Chet Atkins had recorded there, so they turned to a friend of mine for clarification...who turned to me. It turns out that Chet's in-laws did own the property but Chet didn't record there.

That's really cool. How cool would it have been if he had recorded there. I don't know if it's the same house, but Linford did a solo record called Grey Ghost Stories, recorded at home late at night while Karen was asleep. Just him and a piano/acoustic guitar. Great late-night album.
